In a letter to US House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Friday, Obama said that the deployment was made at the request of the Jordanian government. He stated that about 700 of the US troops deployed to Jordan as part of a military training exercise, which ended on Thursday, would stay in the country.
“The troops will stay until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer required”, Obama claimed, but provided no further details.
“This detachment that participated in the exercise and remained in Jordan includes Patriot missile systems, fighter aircraft, and related support, command, control, and communications personnel and systems,” Obama said.
This came as a report by The Los Angeles Times said CIA operatives have been secretly providing the Syrian militants with training on the use of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons for months.
Since the opening of a new US base in the desert in southwest of Jordan in November 2012, the CIA operatives and US special operations troops have covertly trained the militants in groups of 20 to 45 at a time in two-week courses, the report said.
The militants receive training with Russian-designed 14.5-millimeter anti-tank rifles, anti-tank missiles, and 23-millimeter anti-aircraft weapons, according to a militant commander in the Syrian province of Dara’a.
“Those from the CIA, we would sit and talk with them during breaks from training and afterward, they would try to get information on the situation inside” Syria, the report quoted the unnamed commander as saying.
The training program has also been conducted in Turkey, the report said.
Yahya Bittar, another militant commander, said the training is conducted by US, Jordanian and French operatives, adding that up to 100 militants have been sent back across the border to Syria after taking the course in Jordan over the past month.

La CIA et des forces spéciales américaines entraînent des rebelles syriens en Jordanie et en Turquie depuis des mois, soit bien avant que la Maison Blanche n'annonce son intention d'accroître son aide "militaire" à l'opposition, rapporte vendredi 21 juin le "Los Angeles Times". La formation des insurgés comprend le maniement d'armes de guerre antichars et anti-aériennes, affirme le journal, citant des responsables américains et des commandants de la rébellion syrienne.
Ces entraînements, qui n'avaient jamais dépassé dans la presse le stade de la rumeur, ont débuté en novembre 2012 dans une base américaine du sud-ouest de la Jordanie, d'après le L.A. Times, qui explique qu'ils consistent en des sessions de deux semaines pour 20 à 45 combattants syriens rebelles. Der US-Geheimdienst CIA und Eliteeinheiten trainieren in Jordanien mehr als 5.000 Kämpfer der Freien Syrischen Armee. Das seit dem vergangenen Jahr laufende Programm sei zuletzt erheblich ausgeweitet worden, sagten jordanische Militärs. Anfangs hätten die Ausbilder den Rebellen nur beigebracht, wie chemische Waffen entdeckt und gesichert werden. Inzwischen lernten sie auch, wie sie Luftabwehrwaffen und panzerbrechende Raketen bedienen, schreibt die Los Angeles Times.
Mit dem Programm wolle die US-Regierung erreichen, dass die Rebellen Pufferzonen entlang der jordanisch-syrischen Grenze verteidigen, sagte ein jordanischer Armeeangehöriger. Το Αμάν αρνείται ότι η CIΑ εκπαιδεύει σύρους αντάρτες στην Ιορδανία
ReplyDeleteΟ πρωθυπουργός της Ιορδανίας Αμπντάλα Νσουρ διέψευσε σήμερα ότι η CIA σε συνεργασία με τις αμερικανικές ειδικές δυνάμεις εκπαιδεύουν σύρους αντάρτες στην Ιορδανία, όπως υποστηρίζει δημοσίευμα αμερικανικής εφημερίδας.
"Δε γίνεται καμία εκπαίδευση των δυνάμεων της συριακής αντιπολίτευσης στο έδαφός μας», δήλωσε σε ομάδα δημοσιογράφων ο ιορδανός πρωθυπουργός.
'Εμείς έχουμε να κάνουμε μόνο με Σύρους που έχουν αναζητήσει καταφύγιο στο έδαφός μας», τόνισε ο Νσουρ, η χώρα του οποίου φιλοξενεί περίπου 500.000 σύρους πρόσφυγες.
Η εφημερίδα Los Angeles Times έγραψε την Παρασκευή ότι η CIA και οι αμερικανικές ειδικές δυνάμεις εκπαιδεύουν εδώ και μήνες σύρους αντάρτες στην Ιορδανία και την Τουρκία, πριν ο Λευκός Οίκος ανακοινώσει την πρόθεσή του να αυξήσει τη «στρατιωτική» βοήθεια προς τη συριακή αντιπολίτευση.
Σύμφωνα με την εφημερίδα, η οποία επικαλείται αμερικανούς αξιωματούχους και διοικητές της συριακής εξέγερσης, η εκπαίδευση των ανταρτών περιλαμβάνει ασκήσεις με αντιαρματικά και αντιαεροπορικά όπλα.
Η εφημερίδα υποστηρίζει ότι η εκπαίδευση αυτή άρχισε το Νοέμβριο του 2012 σε αμερικανική βάση της νοτιοδυτικής Ιορδανίας.

Russia: US drive to arm Syria rebels hurts chances for peace...
ReplyDeleteRussia accused the United States on Wednesday of stalling chances for peace in Syria by pressing ahead with plans to arm rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad.
Russia is at loggerheads over the conflict with its UN Security Council partner, the United States, where President Barack Obama can now move forward with arming rebels after easing some congressional concerns.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference that Washington's plans would undermine joint efforts to organize an international peace conference on Syria that he agreed to with his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, in May.

ReplyDeleteВопрос: Как бы Вы могли прокомментировать появившуюся в СМИ информацию о новых фактах, свидетельствующих о вовлечении сирийской вооруженной оппозицией детей в боевые действия в Сирии?
Ответ: Подобного рода сообщения не являются новостью. На вовлечение детей в боевые действия в Сирии неоднократно обращали внимание профильные неправительственные организации и международные структуры, включая ООН.
В России данные факты, свидетельствующие о грубейших нарушениях прав детей, в частности Факультативного протокола к Конвенции о правах ребенка, касающегося участия детей в вооруженных конфликтах, вызывают серьезную озабоченность. Особенно беспокоят поступающие данные о том, что в обучении детей и подростков «военному делу» активно участвуют боевики «Аль-Каиды».
Надеемся, что данные факты не останутся без должной реакции со стороны международного сообщества, включая спецпредставителя Генсекретаря ООН по вопросу о положении детей и вооруженных конфликтах.
Рассчитываем также, что те, кто имеет влияние на вооруженную сирийскую оппозицию, воспользуются им с тем, чтобы побудить ее сторонников неукоснительно соблюдать нормы международного права, в том числе в плане недопущения рекрутирования детей для участия в боевых действиях.
