Japan and South Korea hold joint drill in the zone claimed by China in East China Sea / S Korea slams Japan's video claim on disputed islets. -Dokdo/Takeshima issue

The Japanese and South Korean Navy conducted a joint exercise on Thursday in the East China Sea located in an area within China’s Air Defense Zone.

Two warships and a helicopter from Japan and several military units from South Korean were used in the drills on Thursday.

A representative of Japanese Navy said that the drills were a part of routine exercises and the Chinese side was not notified about the use of helicopters during the drills.

"The exercises were planned long before China announced the establishment of its Air Defense Zone in the East China Sea. The maneuvers were not organized as a response to the step taken by China", - stressed the representative of the Japanese Naval Command.

China announced the establishment of its Air Defense Zone in the East China Sea a month ago, in which it included disputed territories with Japan and South Korea within the demarcation zone.

Japan and South Korea refused to accept China’s claim to the Air Zone to which the United States also did not agree. Beijing had announced that all aircraft that intend to fly in this zone are required to provide their flight plan to the Chinese authorities in advance, otherwise they may face "emergency defensive measures". However, China has not clarified the kind of measures it will take in case its Air Defense Zone is violated.

  • S.Korea, Japan joint drill

South Korea on Thursday carried out a joint maritime rescue drill with Japan’s navy in international waters covered by China’s new air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
At the same time, the Chinese and South Korean foreign ministries both issued separate condemnations of Japan for publishing videos that claimed   islands disputed with the two countries as Japanese territory.
Japan’s Maritime Self Defense force used two warships and a helicopter, while its South Korean counterpart also used several pieces of military equipment for the routine training, a Japanese navy spokesman said.
The Japanese military did not inform China about the use of the helicopter, he added.
“It was conducted within what China said was its ADIZ,” he said. “The drill had been planned for a long time, since before China’s announcement. It was not organized in reaction,” he added.
The two Asian countries have refused to recognize the Chinese zone, as has the United States.
However, both South Korea and Japan have permitted its airlines to comply with Beijing’s ADIZ rules for the safety of civil aviation, according to reports from South Korean and Japanese media.
Japan’s foreign ministry this week published a video reasserting its claim on the disputed Diaoyu Islands in 10 languages.
The Chinese foreign ministry Thursday said that Japan should immediately stop all of its provocative actions over the Diaoyu Islands.
It is another provocative action and China has expressed its firm opposition, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters when commenting on the Internet video clip posted on the Japanese foreign ministry’s website.
He reiterated that no publicity could change the fact that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China. Hong said Japan should face up to historical facts and reality, and that it should address these disputes through dialogue and consultation.
“China is resolute in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. It will never allow any country to infringe upon China’s territorial sovereignty,” Hong said.

  • S Korea slams Japan's video claim on disputed islets....

SEOUL: South Korea has condemned Japan for publishing a video in 10 languages challenging its sovereignty over a tiny group of islets at the heart of a territorial dispute, demanding Tokyo remove it.
The film, published Wednesday by the Japanese foreign ministry on its own website and on YouTube, insists the islets in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), called Dokdo by Seoul and Takeshima by Tokyo, are its own.[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYRHZX3m-bg]

The 90-second clip is subtitled and dubbed in 10 languages including English, Korean, Chinese, French, Spanish and Arabic -- described Seoul's de facto control over the islets as "illegal".
"We gravely protest the publication of the video... and strongly demand that Japan remove these videos immediately," Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement released late Wednesday.
"We will never tolerate Japan's attempt to violate our territorial sovereignty and will respond resolutely," it said.
The Japanese foreign ministry website also published a multi-language leaflet to accompany the video, arguing that Japan's connection to the islets stretches back more than 200 years.
Japan and South Korea have bickered for decades over control of the islets. The row escalated last year following a surprise visit by then-South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak. In October, South Korea carried out a military exercise there.
Relations have also been strained by other issues of contention arising from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula.
Japan is embroiled in a separate row with China over another set of disputed islands, in the East China Sea.
Japan's foreign ministry also published this week a video reasserting its claim on the islands -- called Senkaku by Tokyo and Diaoyu by Beijing -- in 10 languages.

  1. China has "full capacity" to monitor ADIZ: FM

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese spokesman said on Friday that China has full capacity to effectively monitor its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) after the People's Republic of Korea and Japan held a joint search and rescue exercise in the East China Sea on Thursday.

The exercise was carried out in an area where the China and Japan air defence identification zones overlap, involving two warships and a helicopter from Japan and several pieces of military equipment from the ROK. The Japanese military did not inform China about use of a helicopter.

"China is monitoring the ADIZ effectively right now," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily news briefing, reiterating China's firm determination to secure its territory and territorial airspace.

Committed to maintain the peace, order and stability of the region and relevant airspace, China hopes all parties can make similar efforts, rather than the opposite, the spokesman said.

Asked to comment on the 76th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese invaders in December 13, 1937, during World War II, Hong said it was an "atrocity" committed by Japanese militarism in invading China.

He urged Japan to face to and deeply reflect on its aggressive past and improve ties with China and other Asian neighbors.

Nanjing witnessed mass murder, genocide and war rape following the Japanese capture of the city in December 13, 1937, during World War II. It claimed the lives of 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers.

  2. Biden assures Abe that U.S. doesn't recognize China air zone...

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday assured Japan that the United States does not recognize a new air zone imposed by China and called for steps to ease tensions.

A week after a trip to China, Japan and South Korea, Biden telephoned Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a new show of support for the country which is bound by a security treaty.

“The vice president reaffirmed that the United States does not recognize China’s recently announced Air Defense Identification Zone and that the announcement will in no way affect U.S. operations in the East China Sea,” the White House said in a statement.

Biden, it said, “reiterated U.S. support for steps to reduce regional tensions, including new bilateral mechanisms for crisis communication.”

He also encouraged Japan and South Korea to improve cooperation. The two U.S. allies have strained relations due to disputes related to Tokyo’s past colonial rule................http://www.japantoday.com/category/politics/view/biden-assures-abe-that-u-s-doesnt-recognize-china-air-zone
