Erdoğan says HDP leaders should ‘pay price’ for ‘constitutional crime’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has suggested that co-leaders of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) should be stripped of their parliamentary immunity, saying their statements calling for autonomy in southeastern Anatolia are a “constitutional crime.”

“The statements of the two co-leaders are definitely a constitutional crime,” he said in remarks published on Saturday. “I believe a process that would start with the lifting of their immunity would positively affect the atmosphere in our country regarding the fight against terrorism.”

Prosecutors in Ankara and the southeastern province of Diyarbakır launched last week investigations into the HDP Co-Chairman Selahattin Demirtaş over his remarks in support of self-rule in the predominantly Kurdish southeastern Anatolia. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ankara has launched the investigation on the grounds of “committing crimes against the Constitution,” “inciting public to hatred and enmity,” and “praising crime and criminals” for his speech at a Democratic Society Congress (DTK) meeting in Diyarbakır on Dec. 26-27 and his remarks during bloody protests against an assault by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani in October 2014.

Both Demirtaş and the other co-leader of the HDP, Figen Yüksekdağ, are also facing an investigation launched by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Diyarbakır for their speeches at the DTK meeting for “propaganda for a terrorist organization,” “inciting people to revolt” and “attempting to disrupt unity of the state and the country.”

Erdoğan, speaking to journalists aboard his presidential plane en route to Turkey from a trip to Saudi Arabia, opposed a possible closure of the HDP but added that the investigations into Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ should be followed. “There could be deputies, mayors and others who commit crimes. They have to pay the price for that. One should consider the investigations launched by the prosecutors in Ankara and Diyarbakır within that framework,” he said, adding: “It is impossible for us to accept calls for division of the country… There are steps that need to be taken to give them the proper response, impose sanctions and initiate a legal process.”
