Italian PM says general elections to be hold in 2018 whatever outcome of referendum

Italy's general elections will be held in 2018 whatever the result of referendum on constitutional reform in November is, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was quoted as saying on Sunday.

According to the ANSA news agency, Renzi confirmed that the elections will be held as scheduled, no matter how the referendum turns out later this year.

  • Renzi declaimed this just one day before the leaders of Germany, France and Italy meet in Naples to talk about how to keep the European project together after the Brexit vote.

The prime minister has staked his political career on a Yes vote in the referendum on constitutional reform, which he believes will bring Italy political stability and economic revival.
