The central Italian town of Amatrice has been badly damaged by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake, with people trapped under the rubble, the town's mayor says.
"The roads in and out of town are cut off. Half the town is gone," Sergio Pirozzi, mayor of Amatrice, told RAI state television.
"There are people under the rubble ... There's been a landslide and a bridge might collapse."
Italy's Civil Protection agency said the earthquake was "severe" and there had been reports of damage, while a refuge on Gran Sasso mountain said on its Facebook page that a large piece of rock collapsed in the quake.
The shallow quake struck 10 kilometres south-east of Norcia, a town in the province of Perugia in south-eastern Umbria.
The quake was felt as far away as Rome, around 150 kilometres away from the epicentre, and woke a number of people there.
On April 6, 2009, the nearby city of L'Aquila was reduced to rubble by a magnitude 6.3 quake. More than 300 people were killed and 1,000 injured.
Six scientists and a former government official were sentenced to six years in jail for multiple manslaughter after failing to properly evaluate the danger and giving wrong advice about that earthquake.

Un séisme de magnitude 6,2 a frappé le centre de l'Italie tôt ce mercredi faisant au moins dix morts, selon les médias italiens, citant des sources locales...
ReplyDeleteLe chef de la protection civile italienne Fabrizio Curcio a cependant refusé lors d'une conférence de presse de donner un bilan officiel, jugeant que c'était encore prématuré.
Trois personnes ont été tuées dans l'effondrement de leur habitation à Pescara del Tronto et Arquata dans la région des Marches, voisine de celle frappée par ce tremblement de terre, ont confirmé les carabiniers de cette commune.

Cinq autres personnes ont été retrouvées sans vie dans les décombres à Amatrice, dans la région du Latium, non loin de l'épicentre du séisme, a assuré de son côté la chaîne de télévision Rainews24, qui ne précise toutefois pas ses sources.
Interrogé par l'agence italienne Agi, le maire d'Accumoli, commune située tout près de l'épicentre du séisme, a de son côté fait état de deux morts, décrivant une ville à moitié détruite. Selon lui, au moins quatre personnes sont encore prisonnières des décombres. "Ici, c'est une tragédie, nous avons des morts et des bâtiments détruits", a-t-il déclaré.
"Nous n'avons plus d'électricité, plus de téléphones, et les secours ne sont pas encore arrivés", a-t-il encore ajouté....rtbf.be
