  1. France has begun air operations over Iraq from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, reports say...

A number of Rafale fighter planes took off from the carrier early on Friday, news agency AFP said.

The Charles de Gaulle, France's only aircraft carrier, was sent to the region earlier in September.

This is its third mission with the US-led coalition since France stepped up military operations after the January 2015 Paris attacks.

Iraqi forces have gained significant ground in the battle for Mosul, which was occupied by IS in June 2014, and are expected to launch an offensive to retake the city soon.

AFP quoted an officer on board, who said the planes would take part in an attack on Mosul, an IS stronghold in Iraq.

However, a French defence official told the Associated Press that Friday's mission was "in no way" the start of a battle for Mosul. He said the ministry would not provide details of the operation for the security reasons.

French radio station RTL reported (in French) that 24 aircraft will take part in today's operation, with a sortie every three minutes, on average.

It also said the fighters were armed with four 250kg laser-guided bombs each.

The Charles de Gaulle is a 38,000-tonne ship powered by two nuclear reactors. It has more than 1,900 crew, and is 260 metres (850ft) long.

  2. French fighter jets took off from an aircraft carrier in the eastern Mediterranean on Friday to engage in aerial attacks against the Islamic State in the Iraqi city of Mosul, according to French media sources...

At around 04:00 am GMT, eight Aéronavale Rafale-M fighters took off from the French "Charles de Gualle" aircraft carrier, which was navigating close to Cyprus as part of France's Operation Chammal in the region, according to French BFM-TV.

The fighters' mission is to assist Iraqi government troops in their bid to expel IS members from Mosul, a current stronghold for the terrorist group.

The "Charles de Gaulle" had just arrived to the area for its third combat tour along with the international coalition led by the United States against IS in Syria and Iraq

The French minister of Defence, Jean-Yves Le Drian, announced that the aircraft carrier's deployment will take place from the end of Sept. to the end of Oct. when the ship is due for a major 18 month maintenance overhaul.

  3. French fighter jets launch mission against IS group in Mosul ...

French fighter jets took off from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle on Friday for an operation against the Islamic State jihadist organisation (IS) in its Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, an officer said.

Eight jets took off from the carrier in the eastern Mediterranean, an AFP photographer on the flight deck reported.

The Charles de Gaulle is on its third mission since February 2015 in support of the US-led coalition fighting the IS group in Iraq and Syria.

It was not immediately clear whether the French jets were to carry out air strikes or were on a reconnaissance mission.

The IS group seized Mosul along with other areas in June 2014, but Iraqi forces have since regained significant ground from the jihadists and are readying for an assault to retake Iraq’s second-largest city with coalition air and artillery support.
