Russian military starts drills in South Ossetia

Russian military starts to take drills from Sept. 20 to 24 in South Ossetia in southern Russia, involving 4,000 Russian servicemen and 1,000 units of military equipment, Russian news agency Sputnik reported Tuesday.

"The servicemen of the Russian military base in the Southern Military District have started the command and staff exercises in South Ossetia. The military crews will practice to overcome the contaminated areas under enemy use of weapons of mass destruction," the Russian Defense Ministry's press service said.

According to the ministry, the aim of the drills is to improve the practical skills of commanders in managing the units while conducting defense in a forested mountainous and flat terrain with advanced automated control systems and new weapons.

The newest unified command and staff vehicles, designed to provide communication and control units during the battle, also take part in the exercise.
