The United Nations Human Rights Council voted Friday in favor of a resolution on the situation in Syria proposed by the United Kingdom.
As many as 24 members of the council voted in favor, seven against and 16 abstained. Russia has proposed several amendments for the document, all of which were rejected. A UN commission must carry out an independent investigation of the situation in Aleppo and bring those responsible for the current crisis to justice, the resolution states.
The council requested the Commission of Inquiry "to conduct a comprehensive, independent special inquiry into the events in Aleppo," the document reads. The inquiry will also identify those it considers responsible and to report its findings to the UN Human Rights Council.
The resolution also calls for accountability of those who violated or abused international humanitarian law, "noting the important role that the International Criminal Court can play in this regard."
The United Nations considers the Syrian-led political process within the framework of the Geneva agreements the only stable solution for the Syrian crisis, the resolution the UN Human Rights Council adopted Friday states.
The council "reiterates that the only sustainable political solution to the current crisis in Syria is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process … that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, with a view to full implementation of the Geneva Communiqué of 30 June 2012," the document reads.
