Informal summit with leaders in Berlin: Merkel to hold talks with British PM on Brexit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Berlin following an informal summit with the leaders of France, Spain, Italy and outgoing US President Barack Obama.

President Obama is on a final visit to Germany before his eight year period in office comes to a close in January.

Mr Obama met Ms Merkel yesterday, with both leaders reasserting their support for a free trade agreement between Europe and the US, a clear indication of the fear that such deals will be under severe threat under President-elect Donald Trump.

President Obama called on Mr Trump to stand up to Russia and not to strike what he called "convenient deals" with President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Obama has been keen to give moral support to the western liberal democratic order, which has been so shaken by the Trump victory.

He will meet the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who is facing a possible referendum defeat in Italy, and French President Francois Hollande, who is all but certain not to be re-elected next year.

All eyes too will be on a bilateral meeting between Ms May and Ms Merkel.
