"It varies depending on the period,” Erdogan said in his first interview with Israeli media in 13 years, when asked by Dayan if he would take back his remarks. “There were moments when Gaza was shelled. I cannot forget the moments when thousands of people were killed by shellings, I can not forget.”
Charging Israel with killing thousands of people in Gaza, the Turkish president refused to retract his comparison of Israel’s military actions during Operation Protective Edge to those of Hitler’s during World War II.
- “I do not agree with what Hitler did and I also do not agree with what Israel did in Gaza,” he added. “So there is no point in making a comparison of who was more barbaric.”
Erdogan also referenced a moment when more than seven years ago, he harshly criticized the late former Israeli President Shimon Peres for Israel’s actions during Operation Cast Lead, another military operation against Hamas in January of 2009.
“I said that you (Israelis) know very well how to kill people,” Erdogan reiterated to Dayan. “I said that in Davos.” The Turkish president had told Peres during a panel at the World Economic Forum in 2009 that “when it comes to killing, you know how to kill very well.”
Erdogan also defended the legitimacy of the Hamas terrorist organization in control of the Gaza Strip, which he said he was in contact with.
