Erdogan Threatens Berlin With Retaliation for Detention of Turkish Lawmaker

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed on Wednesday German authorities for a temporary detention of Turkish Parliament Deputy Speaker Ayse Nur Bahcekapili at the airport in Cologne and threatened them with retaliatory measures.

On Monday, German police detained Bahcekapili for 45 minutes at the airport located in the western German city of Cologne after they regarded her temporary travel document as invalid. Bahcekapili received the document at the Turkish consulate after she lost her passport.

"You allow terrorists and welcome them, put them up, but you make our deputy parliament speaker and delegation wait at the gate for hours … Don't we have to retaliate now? Then you call Erdogan ‘dictator’ … If you behave towards my deputy parliament speaker, a female lawmaker, like this, if your police officer does this, then I need to retaliate to it in the same way," Erdogan said, as quoted by the Anadolu news agency.
