Russia, china veto a Security Council draft resolution on Aleppo

Russia and China on Monday vetoed a draft resolution, submitted by Spain, Egypt and New Zealand to the UN Security Council, calling for a truce in Aleppo, Venezuela voted against the draft resolution while Angola abstained.

“The draft resolution contradicts the work of the Council because it was put in a late time today, and it is not possible to vote it before tomorrow, in addition there was no consensus on this issue,” Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s permanent envoy to the UN said in a speech at the Security Council.

He added the draft resolution also contradicts a plan that will be discussed soon in Geneva by Russian and American experts to have all gunmen out of Aleppo Eastern neighborhoods, and then a cease-fire regime would come into effect.

“The draft resolution put for voting today didn’t include any talk about the exit of gunmen from the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo, but about an immediate cease-fire, thus, it will be left ten days for the gunmen to mobilize their forces and re-organize their ranks,” Churkin said.
