Turkey Issues Arrest Warrant for 8 Coup Suspects in Greece

Turkey Thursday issued an arrest warrant for eight former Turkish army officers who fled to neighboring Greece after the failed July 15 coup bid to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Istanbul court approved a request from prosecutors for the warrant, shortly after Greece's Supreme Court refused to extradite the former officers sought by Ankara over their alleged role in the coup attempt, Anadolu reported.

Greece's Supreme Court has ruled against extraditing eight Turkish air force officers, and the is likely to complicate relations between the two countries.

"It is a great victory for European values, for Greek justice," said the claimants' lawyer, Christos Mylonopoulos, after the ruling on Thursday.

"The legal thinking is obvious. It is the observation of European values, the observation of legality, and the conservation of judicial civilisation."
