EU says ready to help de-escalate tensions on Korean Peninsula

The European Union (EU) on Friday told a South Korean envoy that the bloc was poised to team up with international partners to de-escalate tensions and peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
European Council President Donald Tusk and EU foreign and security policy chief Federica Mogherini met respectively with Cho Yoon-je, the special envoy of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in Brussels, days after Moon's inauguration.

Cho, a professor at Sogang University in Seoul, was picked as a special envoy to the EU and Germany. He served as an economic aide to former President Roh Moo-hyun and was ambassador to Britain from 2005 to 2008.

Moon won a landslide victory in the May 9 presidential by-election. Since his inauguration, Moon had a series of phone conversations with world leaders and promised to send special envoys for discussions on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.
