Rajoy to formally ask Puigdemont about independence status

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the Spanish prime minister called for clarification from Catalonia over its decision to suspend a declaration of independence the previous evening.

"The cabinet has agreed to require formally to the Catalan government to confirm whether it has declared independence or not," Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

"The answer from the Catalan president will determine future events, in the next few days," he also said, adding he would keep acting in a "cautious and responsible" way.

He also said that he wanted to offer "certainty" to the Spanish people and clear up any "confusion" created by recent events.

The clarification, he said, had to come before any other measures were taken by Madrid, such as the option of triggering article 155 of the constitution, which allows the central government to take control of any of its 17, partly autonomous, regions if they don't comply with Spanish law.
