Lebanon President Seeks Diplomatic Help on PM Resignation

Lebanese President Michel Aoun
Lebanese President Michel Aoun is seeking help from diplomats to uncover the mystery surrounding Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri’s resignation, al-Manar TV reported on Thursday.

Meeting with ambassadors, Aoun aim to ask for help in clarifying the circumstances that led to the resignation of Hariri, who has yet to return to Lebanon, the report added.

In the meantime, an official who was speaking on condition of anonymity said to Reuters that “Lebanon is heading toward asking foreign and Arab states to put pressure on Saudi to release Hariri.”

Hariri resigned on Saturday, saying in a televised broadcast he sensed a plot to target his life.

His resignation statement was made and broadcast from the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Reports say the Saudi regime had ordered Hariri to resign in an effort to destabilize Lebanon.

Saad Hariri is the son of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. Hariri has also been the leader of the Future Movement party since 2005.

He became prime minister in 2016 after serving another term between November 2009 and June 2011.
