US, Russian, Iranian ambassadors summoned to Turkish Foreign Ministry
Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors of Iran, Russia and the United States in Ankara and informed them about the ongoing military operation launched into Syria's northwestern Afrin province on Jan. 20, a ministry official told Hürriyet Daily News on conditions of anonymity.


As diplomacy took a heat following the announcement of the military operation deemed "Olive Branch" by the Turksh army, a Turkish foreign ministry official on Jan. 20 said that Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held talks with U.S. counterpart Rex Tillerson in the wake of the announcement of the air strikes at Washington’s request, Agence France-Presse reported.

Meanwhile Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov has spoken on the phone with his U.S. counterpart General Joseph Dunford following Turkey's military engagements in Syria, Sputnik reported.

  1. The Russian Army Command in Syria is undertaking security measures for personnel present in Afrin, after the launch of the Turkish military operation against the Kurdish forces.
    The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Pentagon's arms supplies to US-backed groups in Syria triggered Turkey's military operation in Afrin and undermined the peace process

    "Washington's announcement its decision to start training a border protection force in Syria sparked extremely negative reaction in Ankara," the Minsitry added.

  2. In a statement the Russian Ministry of Defense said Russia was withdrawing troops from Syria's Afrin targeted by Turkish offensive...

    "The command of the Russian group of troops in Syria has taken measures to ensure security of Russian servicemen located in the district of Afrin, where the Turkish Armed Forces launched a special operation against the Kurdish armed groups," the statement read.

    The Russian troops left their posts near the Mennagh Airport prior to the Turkish Air Force’s heavy bombardment of this area near the Afrin Canton.

  5. Ambassadors of Britain, France and China in Ankara were called to Turkish Foreign Ministry on late Saturday and informed about military operation in Syria’s Afrin, a diplomatic official said.

    Earlier, the U.S., Russia and Iranian mission heads in Ankara were also informed about the Turkish military operation, which is dubbed as “Operation Olive Branch”.
