Συγκεκριμένα, ο αμερικανός υπουργός Εξωτερικών σημείωσε ότι η παράδοση των ρωσικών οπλικών συστημάτων θα είχε μια «βαθύτατα αρνητική επίπτωση» και θα έθετε σε κίνδυνο την ασφάλεια του Ισραήλ.
Ο γερμανός ομόλογός του απηύθυνε παραίνεση προς την Μόσχα να μην σταθεί εμπόδιο στην προσπάθεια για αναθέρμανση των ειρηνευτικών συνομιλιών.
Ρωσία και ΗΠΑ πιέζουν για την διοργάνωση ειρηνευτικής διάσκεψης για το συριακό εντός του Ιουνίου στην Γενεύη.
Η συνάντηση Κέρι - Βεστερβέλε στην Ουάσιγκτον έγινε μία ημέρα μετά τη δήλωση του σύρου προέδρου, Μπασάρ Αλ Άσαντ, ότι τα ρωσικά συμβόλαια παροχής όπλων και οπλικών συστημάτων στη Συρία εκτελούνται κανονικά, χωρίς ωστόσο ρητή αναφορά στους πυραύλους S-300.
Το συγκεκριμένο σύστημα, ιδιαίτερα υψηλής τεχνολογίας σε ό,τι αφορά τη στόχευση αεροσκαφών, έχει επίσης τη δυνατότητα αναχαίτισης βαλλιστικών πυραύλων.
Δύο ρωσικές εφημερίδες, επικαλούμενες ρωσικές στρατιωτικές πηγές, σημείωναν την Παρασκευή ότι είναι ακόμη ασαφές αν και κατά πόσον το σύστημα θα παραδοθεί, έστω και εν μέρει, εντός του 2013 από την Μόσχα στην Δαμασκό.

German government on Friday called Russia 'not to escalate' tensions in Syria crisis as Moscow announced plans to sell Syria fighter jets.
"The German government calls on Russia to make contributions to a peaceful and political settlement, not to escalation," Steffen Seibert, a government spokesperson, said.
Earlier on Friday Russia's MiG aircraft manufacturer said it planned to seal an agreement to sell Syria at least ten MiG-29 M/M2 war planes.
In a televised interview on Thursday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Syria suggested that the first shipment of Russian-made S-300 missile defense systems has been delivered to Syria.

The United States and Germany on Friday warned Russia that arming President Bashar Assad's forces would hurt efforts to bring Syria's warring parties together for peace talks.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking after talks with his German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle, said Russian plans to send a sophisticated air defense system to Assad also put Israel's security at risk.
The United States and Russia are pressing for a peace conference in Geneva next month between Syria's government and opposition. Westerwelle called on Assad to "stop the violence and come to the negotiating table" and told Russia that sending the S-300 missiles to Assad "is totally wrong."

Kerry: Russia serious about Syria peace ....
ReplyDeleteUS Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that he believes Russia is serious about moving toward peace in Syria, and that the upcoming talks in Geneva will be a test of Moscow's intentions.
Russia has been critcized for its sale of advanced anti-aircraft missiles to the Syria regime, which has for two years been fighting opposition forces seeking to oust the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Report: UK ready to arm Syria rebels if peace talks fail .....
ReplyDeleteBritain is prepared to send arms to Syrian rebels should peace talks set for June fail to bring about an end to the conflict, The Financial Times reported on Friday, citing UK officials.
“The precise timing has not yet been finalized and no decision has yet been taken. But we are likely to be ... shipping arms to the rebels by August,” the Times quoted the official as saying.
“What I expect is that over the next two or three months western powers will move low-grade arms supplies in bulk to the rebels. The rebels need ammunition, and a lot of it, just to keep fighting,” the official added.
