(2 VIDEOS)

--

  5. Officials: White House believes Congress will support Syria military strike...

WASHINGTON - The White House believes Congress will vote in favor of a US military strike against Syria because of the threat that chemical weapons pose to the security of Israel and other allies in the region, senior administration officials told reporters on Saturday.

President Barack Obama decided late on Friday he wanted to seek the approval of Congress - a step that is not legally required, and an option his advisors had not been advocating - because he believes the debate and vote will unite a war-weary country behind the action, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

  8. John Kerry: US 'has evidence of Syrian sarin use'...

The US has evidence that the chemical nerve agent sarin was used in a deadly attack in Damascus last month, Secretary of State John Kerry says.

He said samples from hair and blood gathered after the attack "tested positive for signatures of sarin".

The US blames the Syrian government for the 21 August attack. President Barack Obama has vowed punitive action but wants Congress to vote on it first.

Syria dismissed the delay and said it was ready for any strike.

Kerry no llegó a aclararlo. 14. Obama 'has the right' to strike Syria regardless of Congress vote, says Kerry....

Secretary of state says the US has evidence that sarin gas was used in chemical attacks, as the Obama administration seeks to persuade congressional sceptics of military action.

The Obama administration indicated on Sunday that it would launch military strikes against Syria even if it failed to get the backing of the US Congress, claiming evidence that sarin gas had been used in chemical attacks outside Damascus last month.

Less than a day after the president vowed to put an attack to a congressional vote, secretary of state John Kerry said the administration was determined to act against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, and did not need the backing of Congress to do so.

  16. Iranian agency drops Rafsanjani remarks accusing Syrian government of using chemicals...

An Iranian news agency quoted former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani as saying Syria's government had attacked its own people with chemical weapons, but later replaced the report with a different version that did not attribute blame for the raid.

The second version by the semi-official Iranian Labour News Agency reported him as saying on Sept. 1: "On the one hand the people of Syria are the target of a chemical attack, and now they must wait for an attack by foreigners."

In the earlier version, the quote was: "The people have been the target of a chemical attack by their own government and now they must also wait for an attack by foreigners."

The earlier version of his remarks differed sharply from comments by other Iranian officials, who have said rebels trying to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were responsible for a poison gas attack on the outskirts of Damascus on Aug. 21.

The attack has drawn Western threats of military reprisals against the Syrian government, an ally of Iran.

In other remarks which were unchanged, Rafsanjani went on: "Right now America, the Western world along with some of the Arab countries are nearly issuing a clarion call for war in Syria - may God have mercy on the people of Syria," he said.

"The people of Syria have seen much damage in these two years, the prisons are overflowing and they've converted stadiums into prisons, more than 100,000 people killed and millions displaced," he added.

Rafsanjani is a close ally of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and chairs Iran's Expediency Council, which advises Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian soldiers suffered chemical weapons attacks during the country's 1980-1988 war with Iraq, and Iran has repeatedly condemned their use.

  17. Even after 100,000 deaths in Syria, chemical weapons attack evoked visceral response...

After the guns of World War I fell silent, the world’s nations convened in Geneva to outlaw for the first time an entire class of weapons. Barely 1 percent of the war’s battlefield deaths had come from toxic chemicals, yet these had evoked greater horror than the blast wounds, shrapnel and bullets that killed millions more.

Nearly a century later, images of another chemical-weapons attack are stirring some Western capitals into action, this time over the alleged gassing of thousands of Syrian civilians by their government. Now, as then, the toll of dead and injured is relatively small, roughly equal to the average number of fatalities in an ordinary week in Syria’s civil war....http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/even-after-100000-deaths-in-syria-chemical-weapons-attack-evoked-visceral-response/2013/08/31/de6c2b3e-1277-11e3-b4cb-fd7ce041d814_story.html?wprss=rss_homepage

  21. Mediterranean 'Ballistic Targets' Were Part of Israeli Test – Defense Ministry...

MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) – Two “ballistic targets” detected Tuesday in the Mediterranean by the Russian military were launched by the Israeli military as part of a joint US-Israeli test of its missile defense system, an official in Tel Aviv said.

“The launches we’re talking about were a test of the Anchor target missile that is used for testing our missile defense system,” an Israeli Defense Ministry representative told RIA Novosti.

The launch was part of joint tests with the US military and were successfully tracked by radars in Israel, the official added.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier Tuesday its ballistic missile early warning system had detected the launch of the two "ballistic targets" in the Mediterranean.

The launch was detected at 10:16 Moscow time (06:16 GMT) by a radar in the southern Russian city of Armavir, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. The targets’ trajectories ran from the central to the eastern Mediterranean, the spokesman said.

A diplomatic source in the Syrian capital, Damascus, told RIA Novosti that the targets fell in the sea.

The Russian Embassy in Damascus said it did not have any information about the launch. The streets and residents of the Syrian capital appeared calm, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported the launch to President Vladimir Putin, the spokesman told Russian journalists.

  22. Turkey talks of possible role in Syria with United States...

Turkey has discussed several military options on Syria with the United States in preliminary talks, a Turkish diplomat said today, after a report claimed that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey had offered Washington the use of their military assets for possible intervention.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in a phone call to Democratic lawmakers that those were the first three countries to make such offers, and other countries were expected to do so in the coming days as well, according to two people who were on the call, a CNN report said.

Approached by the Hürriyet Daily News, however, a Turkish diplomat dismissed the suggestion that Turkey had offered specific military assets, saying that in the talks several military options had been discussed involving Turkey. “In an action in which NATO would also participate, the possible role Turkey could play and what contributions it could make was discussed,” the diplomat said.

CNN reported that two senior Arab diplomats had said talks with Saudi Arabia and the UAE were preliminary, and no details had been discussed.

When Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said collateral damage from a strike was expected to be low, some lawmakers reportedly questioned how officials could know that.

But two leading Republican senators who met with President Barack Obama on Sept. 2 said the administration signaled increased support for Syria’s opposition, in a bid to shift the balance of power in the civil war.

“There seems to be emerging from this administration a pretty solid plan to upgrade the opposition,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, according to CNN’s report.

Sen. John McCain said he was more supportive of a limited U.S. strike after the meeting, partly because of the prospect of that increased support. However, both senators reportedly also said they needed more detailed assurances that the U.S. strategy would be sufficiently strong and sustainable before they could endorse it to their colleagues.

  24. Officials Make Case for Strike Before Senate Panel...

WASHINGTON — Two cabinet secretaries who fought during the Vietnam War and a four-star general whose views on intervention were shaped by command tours in Iraq appeared before the Senate on Tuesday to argue the Obama administration’s case for Congressional authorization to attack Syria over chemical weapons use.

The three men, drawn from President Obama’s senior national security team, said that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government directly puts American interests at risk, and that other potential adversaries, whether North Korea or Iran, would be emboldened if the United States failed to act.

Secretary of State John Kerry, in his remarks before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged Congress to vote in favor of the president ordering a military strike and argued that “the risk of not acting is greater than the risk of acting.”

Mr. Kerry, who once served as the chairman of the committee, sat next to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, a former member of the panel, and recalled the flawed intelligence assessments that helped propel the Senate to approve American military action against Iraq in 2003. He said this case was different....http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/09/04/world/middleeast/officials-make-case-for-strike-before-senate-panel.html?from=homepage

  25. First Syria rebels armed and trained by CIA 'on way to battlefield'...

The first cell of Syrian rebels trained and armed by the CIA is making its way to the battlefield, President Barack Obama has [reportedly] told senators.

During a meeting at the White House, the president assured Senator John McCain that after months of delay the US was meeting its commitment to back moderate elements of the opposition.

Mr Obama said that a 50-man cell, believed to have been trained by US special forces in Jordan, was making its way across the border into Syria, according to the New York Times.

The deployment of the rebel unit seems to be the first tangible measure of support since Mr Obama announced in June that the US would begin providing the opposition with small arms.

Congressional opposition delayed the plan for several weeks and rebel commanders publicly complained the US was still doing nothing to match the Russian-made firepower of the Assad regime.

Mr McCain has been a chief critic of the White House's reluctance to become involved in Syria and has long demanded that Mr Obama provide the rebels with arms needed to overthrow the regime......http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/10283758/First-Syria-rebels-armed-and-trained-by-CIA-on-way-to-battlefield.html

  26. McCain Played Poker at Senate Hearing on Syria — Report...

MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) — US Senator John McCain played poker on his mobile telephone during a Senate hearing on the United States’ possible use of force in Syria, Washington Post reported.

After the article with the picture was released in the daily, McCain wrote in his Twitter: “Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!”

    1. Sen. McCain caught playing iPhone poker game during Senate hearing on Syria...

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was caught red-handed by a reporter playing a game on his iPhone as his Senate colleagues and top Obama administration officials discussed a strike on Syria at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Tuesday.

The Republican senator, who met with the White House Monday to discuss the conflict, admitted he was playing the poker game during the hearing after the Washington Post posted a photo of him doing so.

“Scandal!” McCain tweeted from his personal account. “Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!”

McCain and fellow GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., announced conditional support for Obama’s plan on a strike on Syria at a Monday press conference, but said any U.S. military strike would need to have the goal of degrading the Assad regime.
