The Hong Kong Observatory has issued No. 8 storm signal, its third highest weather alert as Typhoon Utor approaches Hong Kong. Forecasters say the alert will remain in force for most of the day today.
Strong winds and heavy downpours lashed Hong Kong overnight. After ravaging through the Philippines and displacing thousands of residents, Typhoon Utor turned towards Hong Kong Wednesday morning.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued storm signal No. 8 early in the morning. This is the Observatory’s third highest alert level. According to the forecast, Utor will be closest to the city during the day, skirting around 250 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong.

Businesses and non-essential government services have closed. Classes in all schools and kindergartens were cancelled today. Trading on the stock exchange was also temporarily closed and is expected to resume in the afternoon.

Hundreds of flights have already been delayed or cancelled due to the storm. Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and Hong Kong Airlines have warned that dozens more incoming and outgoing flights may be cancelled today.

Utor is the fifth tropical cyclone of the year that has required a typhoon signal to be raised. It is also the first severe typhoon to approach in 13 months.
The cyclone was not expected to hit Hong Kong directly, but to stray towards the western fringes of the Chinese mainland’s Guangdong province, nearer to Macao and the island of Hainan.
However, the Observatory warned that gale force winds will still be prevailing on Wednesday. The bad weather is forecast to last through to Thursday.

At least one person has been confirmed dead and five others are missing after Typhoon Utor swept through southern China on Wednesday.

It’s brought high winds and torrential rain, triggering floods and mountain torrents, leading to several reports of casualties. The storm moved into Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Wednesday night and is expected to linger there for another four days.

The Railways Bureau in Nanning, Guangxi’s capital, has announced that sections of the track linking the region to Hunan Province collapsed after foundations were damaged by the storm. Passenger services on the line were suspended on Wednesday, though some services have been resumed.
