Iran Warns of Military Intervenstion in Syria

Iran stated on Saturday that there is "proof" that Syrian militants used chemical weapons in their war against the Syrian government, reassuring that “we are very concerned about information regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and we strongly condemn the use of such weapons.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Abbas Araqchi, was quoted by ISNA news agency as saying that there is proof terrorist groups carried out this action,’ Araqchi said in reference to Wednesday's allegedly deadly attacks in the Damascus area.

Iran also warned against any Western military intervention in the Syrian conflict, after the United States suggested it was weighing up such a possibility.

"There is no international authorization for a military intervention in Syria. We warn against any actions or statements that could create more tension in the region. I hope that White House officials show enough wisdom not to enter into such dangerous tumult," Araqchi added.

He further considered that "the provocative words of American officials or sending warships do not help to solve the problem in any way, but make the situation in the region more dangerous.”
“Iran has declared on several occasions that the crisis in Syria did not have a military solution," Araqchi was quoted as saying.

  4. Medical charity MSF says 355 dead in Syria chemical attack...

........MSF has no staff of its own in the Damascus region, but has been supporting hospitals and medical networks there since 2012.

"The reported symptoms of the patients, in addition to the epidemiological pattern of the events — characterized by the massive influx of patients in a short period of time, the origin of the patients, and the contamination of medical and first aid workers — [strongly indicate] mass exposure to a neurotoxic agent," MSF director of operations Bart Janssens said in a statement.

"This would constitute a violation of international humanitarian law, which absolutely prohibits the use of chemical and biological weapons."

Janssens said MSF could not confirm the cause of the symptoms or say who was responsible for the attack, but that it had sent 7,000 vials of atropine - an antidote against nerve agents.

  6. Despite turmoil, Syria regime feels new confidence...Deputy Prime Minister says country has reached a turning point, predicts violence will steadily decline...

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The signs would seem bad for President Bashar Assad. Blasts echo all day long over the Syrian capital as troops battle rebels entrenched on its eastern doorstep. The government admits the economy is devastated. Allegations of a horrific chemical attack have given new life to calls for international action against his regime.

Yet the regime appears more confident than ever that it weathered the worst and has gained the upper hand in the country’s civil war, even if it takes years for victory.

Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil traces a slow arc in the air with his hand to show how the country has reached a turning point in “the events” — the most common euphemism here for 2 1/2 years of bloodshed.

“If the previous trajectory was all negative, it is now on a new course of a gradual reduction of violence, until it goes back to zero,” he told The Associated Press.

“The turning point changes the course of things, but it will take a while,” he said. “I don’t think the path downward will take as long as the path of escalation did.”

There are multiple reasons for the new sense of assurance. The military scored a string of victories on the ground the past few months that blunted a rebel surge early in the year. Army offensives stalled or pushed back rebels in Damascus’ suburbs. A rebel drive into a regime heartland in the western province on the Mediterranean coast was swiftly reversed over the past week. The bleeding of defections from the military to the rebellion appears to have slowed.

The regime also believes it has shored up its most serious vulnerability: the economy. Prices for food and clothes have quadrupled in some cases, the Syrian pound has plunged in comparison with the dollar, and the war has crippled production and trade.

But this summer, Syria’s allies Russia and Iran effectively handed the government a lifeline, with credit lines to buy rice, flour, sugar, petroleum products and other staples. With that, the regime hopes it can keep an exhausted population clothed, fed, warm in the winter — and firmly on its side — enough to endure a long fight.

When asked whether Syria would have to pay back the credit lines in the future, Jamil smiled, saying, “It’s between friends.”

Also, the increasing presence of foreign jihadi fighters, many linked to al-Qaida, has played in the regime’s favor. The Islamic militants’ strength has made the United States and its allies wary of sending badly needed weapons to the rebels and of taking direct military action against Assad, for fear of what could come next if he falls.....http://www.timesofisrael.com/despite-turmoil-syria-regime-feels-new-confidence/

  8. Kerry calls Syrian foreign minister, regional counterparts...

(Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke to Syrian foreign Walid al-Moualem on Thursday and told him the Damascus government should have let U.N. inspectors have access to the site of an alleged gas attack, the State Department said on Saturday.

Kerry called "to make clear that if, as they claimed, the Syrian regime has nothing to hide, it should have allowed immediate and unimpeded access to the site rather than continuing to attack the affected area to block access and destroy evidence," a State Department official said.

"The secretary further emphasized ... that he had received full assurances from Free Syrian Army commanders that they would ensure the safety of U.N. investigators into the targeted areas," the official said.

Kerry, who participated remotely in a White House meeting on a potential U.S. response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria, made a round of diplomatic calls on Saturday to his counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkey, the official said.

"In all these calls, the secretary emphasized the importance of quickly determining the facts and underscored the seriousness and gravity of any chemical weapons use," the official said.

  9. Obama, Cameron discuss Syria response...

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday talked over the phone about security challenges in the wake of alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Obama and Cameron spoke "on the shared security challenges faced by the United States and the United Kingdom, including continued violence in Syria," the White House said in a statement.

The two leaders "expressed their grave concern about the reported use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime against civilians near Damascus on Wednesday, August 21," it said.

They would continue to consult closely regarding this incident, as well as possible responses by the international community to the use of chemical weapons, it added.

  10. Syria Ready to Let UN Inspect Alleged Chemical Attack Site - Iran...

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - In a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, the Syrian foreign minister expressed readiness to give a team of UN investigators access to the site of an alleged chemical attack in a Damascus suburb, Iran’s Press TV said.

“Damascus is now holding talks with the UN inspectors on the access to the site of the alleged chemical attack,” the channel said citing an Iranian foreign ministry statement.

After discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Syria’s top diplomat Walid al-Muallem also had a phone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the purported attack, AFP said.

The talks were "to make clear that if, as they claimed, the Syrian regime has nothing to hide, it should have allowed immediate and unimpeded access to the site rather than continuing to attack the affected area to block access and destroy evidence," an unnamed US diplomat said.

The UN team of chemical weapons investigators started working in Damascus on Monday. The team is expected to visit three sites where chemical weapons attacks allegedly occurred earlier. One site is the town of Khan al-Assal, in Syria’s northern Aleppo province, where the Syrian government claimed rebels used chemical weapons in March.....http://en.rian.ru/world/20130825/182954850/Syria-Ready-to-Let-UN-Inspect-Alleged-Chemical-Attack-Site---Iran.html

  13. Russia says 'tragic mistake' to assign blame too soon for Syrian gas attack...

(Reuters) - Russia said on Sunday that assigning blame too soon over the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria would be a "tragic mistake", before a U.N. investigation on Monday.

Without directly naming the United States but in comments that warned against any military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, Moscow urged against "hurried conclusions" over the reports of a poison gas attack.

"We strongly urge those who, in trying to impose their opinion on U.N. experts ahead of the results of an investigation, announce the possibility of military action against Syria, to exercise discretion and not make tragic mistakes," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

U.S. President Barack Obama met his military and national security advisers on Saturday to debate options, and U.S. naval forces have been repositioned in the Mediterranean to give Washington the option of an armed strike.

Russia, which has suggested that Syrian rebels may have carried out the attack, said it welcomed Syria's decision to allow U.N. experts to visit the site where many hundreds of people were reported dead on Wednesday.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's office said in a statement on Sunday that Syria had promised to observe a ceasefire at the site in the suburbs of Damascus while a U.N. team begins "on-site fact-finding activities".
