  • Israel blamed by Iran for Beirut bombings
MK Tzachi Hanegbi categorically denies Jerusalem’s involvement in Tuesday’s deadly explosions in Lebanon.

Iran’s ambassador in Lebanon accused Israel of being responsible for a blast that rocked the Iranian embassy in Beirut, killing at least 23 people Tuesday.

Ghazanfar Rokn Abadi told Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television that “the agents of the Zionist entity Israel are behind the blasts,” according to a translation provided by the Naharnet news site.

“This terrorist attack will not affect us,” he reportedly added, “but it will make us stronger and more convinced of our stances.”
Veteran Israeli lawmaker MK Tzachi Hanegbi rejected the accusations, saying that it is sometimes “humoristic” that Israel is blamed for everything bad happening in the Middle East.

“A country that is perpetrating terror all over the world, maybe feels” comfortable accusing others of the same, and “Israel is there to blame,” he told reporters at a briefing organized by The Israel Project. “There are things that we do that we do take responsibility for, because they have to do with Israel’s security. But Israel’s security gains nothing from bloodshed in Beirut or in any other Arab state,” he added.
The attack is likely the result of tensions in Lebanon following Hezbollah’s decision to fight in Syria on President Bashar Assad’s side in the civil war in that country, at Iran’s behest, said Hanegbi, a member of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Jerusalem played “no part” in Tuesday’s attack, and “of course Israel had nothing to do with such attacks in the past,” Hanegbi added.
Syria’s Minister of Information Omran Ahed Al Zoubi said Tuesday that it was countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states that “spread terror” in the region, according to a Ynet News report.
Zoubi said the Beirut attack could only have been carried out by a large team such as those fielded by governments and intelligence organizations.
The attack, believed by Lebanese authorities to have been carried out by a suicide bomber on foot or motorcycle, followed by a car bomb, injured some 140 people, damaged several buildings and destroyed at least 10 vehicles.
Among those killed was the Iranian cultural attache.

  1. Toll rises to 23 killed, 146 injured in Beirut blasts..

BEIRUT, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the twin bombings that rocked area Tuesday near the Iranian embassy in Beirut rose to 23 killed and 146 others injured, the Lebanese caretaker health minister said.

Ali Hassan Khalil said that the toll from the blast, which took place in Hezbollah's stronghold in the southern suburbs of the capital, could rise further, according to the state-run National News agency (NNA).

The NNA said earlier that a suicide bomber blew himself up in a parking lot near the embassy at 10:15 a.m. followed by another suicide bomber who blew a bobby-trapped car near the embassy.

A local security source estimated the weight of the explosive materials used in the explosion to be around 100 kgs of TNT.

Al Mayadeen TV reported that the civil defense teams managed to put off the huge fire that erupted due to the explosions and is working on rescuing the people who were trapped in the homes.

Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati called the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon Ghadanfar Roknabadi and offered him condolences over the victims.

On August 15 a booby trapped car bomb exploded in the Rouweiss neighborhood in the southern suburbs, killing 15 people and injuring more than 150 others.

On August 23 twin car bombings targeted two mosques in the northern port city of Tripoli, leaving 47 killed and more than 350 others injured.

Both bombings were related to the Syrian crisis and the involvement of Lebanese political factions, particularly Hezbollah in the ongoing fighting in the neighboring country.

Lebanon's President Michel Suleiman has called on all Lebanese to respect the official policy of disassociation adopted by the government, and refrain from getting involved in the Syrian crisis.

  2. At least 32 people, including the Iranian cultural attaché, were killed and dozens injured in twin bombings earlier today near the Iranian embassy in Beirut...

An al-Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's twin bombings that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut and killed at least 32 people.

"The Hussein bin Ali cells of Abdullah Azzam Brigades are behind the attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut," Sirajeddine Zuraiqat, a Brigades leader, posted on his Twitter account.

He said the suicide bombings were "carried out by two Lebanese Sunnis."

He vowed more attacks until the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah withdrew its fighters from Syria and his fighters are released from Lebanese prisons.

At least 32 people, including the Iranian cultural attaché, were killed and dozens injured in twin bombings earlier today near the Iranian embassy in Beirut.

Several nearby buildings and vehicles were damaged by the blasts.

Security forces immediately sealed off the site of the two explosions, which occurred in Beirut's Southern District, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Military involvement by Hezbollah and Iran in Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's ongoing military conflict with armed rebel groups in Syria has drawn condemnation from Sunni-Muslim quarters both inside and outside Lebanon.
