Armed gunmen reportedly abducted the two journalists, working for Radio France Internationale (RFI), on Saturday in Kidal.
In a statement to the media late last night, the 15-member Council expressed its condolences to the family of the victims, as well as to the French Government.
“In accordance with international humanitarian law, journalists, media professionals and associated personnel engaged in dangerous professional missions in areas of armed conflict are generally considered as civilians and shall be respected and protected as such,” the statement reiterated.
The Council members demanded that “all parties to an armed conflict comply fully with the obligations applicable to them under international humanitarian law, including as related to the protection of civilians in armed conflict.”
They called on the Government of Mali to “swiftly investigate the case” and to hold those responsible to account.
In its statement, the Council also reaffirmed that any acts of terrorism are “criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”.
The Members also reiterated their full support to the UN Mission in Mali and the French forces, and called on all parties to cooperate fully with the Mission.
The Security Council set up the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in April to support the West African country's recovery from a coup and the occupation of its north by Islamist fundamentalists, its transition back to stability and democratic governance, and the promotion of human rights and provision of humanitarian aid.

Les journalistes français au Mali "ont été assassinés froidement" ...
ReplyDeleteUne réunion de crise s'est tenue ce dimanche matin à l'Elysée en France, au lendemain de la mort de deux journalistes de RFI, Radio France Internationale, assassinés au Mali. L'objectif : établir précisément les circonstances de ces assassinats. Les deux journalistes "ont été assassinés froidement. L'un a reçu deux balles, l'autre trois balles", a déclaré le chef de la diplomatie française.
Laurent Fabius a donc donné plus de détails sur les circonstances de la mort des deux journalistes.
Ghislaine Dupont, 51 ans, et Claude Verlon, 58 ans, se sont rendus à Kidal, dans le Nord du Mali, pour y réaliser des reportages dans le cadre de la campagne pour les élections législatives du 24 novembre. Alors qu'ils venaient d'interviewer un responsable du MNLA, mouvement autonomiste touarègue, ils ont été enlevés par des hommes en armes, apparemment d'origine touarègue aussi.
Ils ont été emmenés hors de la ville. Alertée, une patrouille de l'armée française s'est lancée à la poursuite du véhicule. Il a été retrouvé vide à 10 kmde la ville, les deux journalistes gisant à côté, tués par balles. Les ravisseurs avaient disparu. A aucun moment ils n'ont été aperçus par les soldats français.
La ville de Kidal, dans le nord du pays est au cœur de la zone touarègue et proche des frontières nigériennes et algériennes. La zone n'est pas sécurisée. Des éléments terroristes islamistes d'Al-Qaïda Maghreb, Aqmi,s'y déplacent encore, malgré les revers que leur ont infligé l'armée française. Une armée qui ne veut plus embarquer les journalistes vers cette zone, les deux reporters de RFI l'avait rejointe dans un convoi de la Minusma, la force des NationsUnies.
La condamnation de ces assassinats est générale, y compris au sein des mouvements autonomistes touarègues. Les spécialistes de la région y voient le plus probablement la marque Al-Qaïda Maghreb, qui essaie pour le moment de perturber le processus électoral en cours.
Notons que le chef de la diplomatie française a également annoncé que la sécurité allait être accrue dans la zone, sans donner davantage de détails.
