  1. Russia-Ukraine talks fuel suspicion, anger in Kiev...

(Reuters) - Pro-Europe protesters accused Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich on Saturday of planning to seal a customs union with former Soviet master Moscow this month, a move that would stoke further turmoil in Kiev.

One opposition leader said returning to Moscow's economic fold could even endanger the unity of Ukraine, a sprawling country of 46 million that borders four European Union member states and is the main transit route for Russian gas to Europe.

The Moscow and Kiev governments both denied Yanukovich and Russia's President Vladimir Putin had discussed the customs union in unannounced talks on Friday in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

But the secrecy of the meeting, and speculation they had struck a deal, was seized on by opposition leaders rallying protesters against a decision last month by Yanukovich to spurn a deal on trade ties and integration with the European Union.

"Any signature to a deal on forming a new Soviet Union means the breakup of the country," Arseny Yatsenyuk, one of three main opposition leaders, told reporters.

Yatsenyuk, a former economy minister, accused Yanukovich of planning to sign Ukraine up to a regional Customs Union, led by Russia, at a meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian governments scheduled for December 17 in Moscow..........http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/07/us-russia-ukraine-idUSBRE9B606020131207?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  3. Protests Reach Crunch Stage in Ukraine As Russia Deal Looms...

KIEV, December 7 (RIA Novosti) – Protests entering their third week in the Ukrainian capital looked set to gain new momentum Saturday as President Viktor Yanukovych committed his former Soviet nation to greater economic ties with Russia.

Thousands of people, many of them waving flags of Ukraine and opposition political parties, assembled in Independence Square to listen to speeches throughout the day calling for the government’s ouster and condemning last week’s heavy-handed treatment by police of demonstrators camped in the square.

Rallies in Kiev and in other cities across Ukraine erupted late last month in reaction to the government’s decision to back away from a deal to sign association agreement and free trade deals with the EU.

It is unclear to what extent the three opposition parties most actively engaged in the protest – Batkivshchyna (Fatherland), Udar (Punch) and Svoboda (Freedom) – are in fact in control of this wave of discontent, but they have served as its public face and have laid out conditions for negotiations with the authorities.

The protest movement appeared to be losing momentum until November 30, when police aggressively cleared Independence Square, sparking outrage and prompting hundreds of thousands to rally on the spot the following day.

Talking to reporters at the united opposition movement’s headquarters, Udar leader and heavyweight boxer Vitaly Klitschko demanded punishment for those involved in the raid on the square and the resignation of the Cabinet as a precondition for talks to create a technical government.

Arseny Yatsenyuk, who leads the Batkivshchina faction in parliament, said the technical government could undertake the task of signing the EU pacts abandoned by Yanukovych.............http://en.ria.ru/world/20131207/185342645/Protests-Reach-Crunch-Stage-in-Ukraine-As-Russia-Deal-Looms.html

  4. Ukrainian Premier Hails Imminent Russian Deal as Protests Continue...

KIEV, December 7 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said late Friday that a major economic deal with Russia was imminent as protesters in Kiev geared up for another weekend of protests amid the ongoing political stand-off in the former Soviet nation.

“We are talking about preparations for a big agreement about strategic partnership with the Russian Federation,” Azarov told journalists, according to a government statement.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday in the Russian city of Sochi on the way back from a visit to China.

No details of the meeting were released, but Azarov said that the two presidents discussed a road map for the elimination of trade conflicts, in particular disagreements over gas supplies.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, said Saturday that no agreements on an energy deal had been reached in the discussions, and that Ukraine’s accession to the Customs Union had not been touched upon.

Opposition leader Arseny Yatsenyuk said Saturday he had information that the partnership agreement is already reached and Yanukovich plans to sign the document on December 17..............http://en.ria.ru/world/20131207/185333302/Ukrainian-Premier-Hails-Imminent-Russian-Deal-as-Protests-Continue.html
