Russian train station hit by deadly suicide bombing. (2 video)

 -
At least 18 people were killed and 40 others wounded when an explosion tore through a train station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Sunday, in an attack blamed on a female suicide bomber, Russian media and officials said.

Regional interior ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Smolyaninova told the ITAR-TASS news agency that the blast occurred inside the train station at around 12:45 pm (0845 GMT).

The news agency said the explosion took place near the metal detectors stationed at the entrance to the city's main train station.

Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said in a statement shortly after that a female suicide bomber had carried out the attack.

The explosion is the deadliest such blast to take place in Russia outside the volatile North Caucasus region in nearly three years.

Security fears for Sochi

Coming just two months after another suicide bomber struck in the same Russian city, it will bolster fears of attacks by Islamist militants as Russia prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The Black Sea city lies 690 kilometres (425 miles) southwest of Volgograd and in direct proximity of the violence ravaging North Caucasus regions such as Dagestan and Chechnya on a daily basis.

Militants are seeking to impose an Islamist state throughout Russia's North Caucasus.

Their leader Doku Umarov has ordered his foot soldiers to target civilians outside the region and disrupt the Olympic Games.

Female suicide bombers are often referred to in Russia as "black widows" – women who seek to avenge the deaths of their family members in North Caucasus fighting by targeting Russian civilians.

Female suicide bombers set off blasts at two Moscow metro stations in March 2010 that killed more than 35 people.

So-called black widows were also responsible for taking down two passenger jets that took off from a Moscow airport within minutes of each other in 2004, killing about 90 people.

    1. At Least 14 Killed in Second Volgograd Suicide Bombing....

VOLGOGRAD, December 30 (RIA Novosti) – A fatal bomb explosion ripped apart a trolleybus in Volgograd on Monday morning, killing at least 14 people and injuring 28, in the second terrorist attack in the southern Russian city in less than 24 hours.

Several of the wounded, who officials said included a six-month-old infant, are in serious condition.

Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said that investigators believe a male suicide bomber carried out the attack, which he said was linked to another fatal bombing in the city on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities believe the first explosion, which killed 17 people and injured more than 40 at the Volgograd-1 railway station, was also the work of a suicide bomber.

Markin said that remains of both suspected bombers, which were recovered at the scenes, are undergoing DNA testing.

Monday’s blast marks the third such attack in Volgograd in two months, and comes just weeks before Russia is due to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in February in the city of Sochi.

The bomb detonated in a trolleybus, packed with morning commuters, at about 8:10 a.m. (0410 GMT), the Investigative Committee said.

Television footage filmed at the scene near a market in the city’s Dzerzhinsky district showed debris strewn across the street around the blackened shell of the trolleybus, its roof blown outward by the explosion.

“I left the house and heard a loud bang and screams of people,” an eyewitness told television channel Rossiya-24.

“I saw what had happened. At first I didn’t realize that it was a trolleybus, it was completely destroyed. Everything was blown out, not only the glass but even the walls. People ran.”

State television said the force of the blast also blew out the windows of the nearby houses.

Local resident Sergei Stukalov told RIA Novosti that passengers began getting off buses and trams and walked to work after hearing about the attack.

Officials were forced to quell rumors of additional bombings after reports appeared on some social media pages about other explosions in the city.

“It’s panic,” said regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Smolyaninova.

Alarm briefly spread to Moscow, when reports emerged that Red Square had been briefly evacuated after a woman dropped a bag on the ground and ran away. 12. 2 More Volgograd Victims Hospitalized....

Two more people injured by suicide bombings in Russia’s southern city of Volgograd earlier this week have been hospitalized, bringing the number of wounded in local clinics to 46, RIA Novosti reports.

The victims were receiving outpatient care but were hospitalized after their conditions worsened, the health ministry official said Thursday evening. Eighteen more victims are being treated in Moscow clinics after being airlifted from Volgograd.

Suicide bombers blew up a train station and a trolleybus crowded with morning commuters within 24 hours of each other on December 29 and 30, killing a total of 34 people and injuring 64 more. The attacks follow just two months after another terrorist strike in Volgograd in October, when a bomb carried by a young woman from Dagestan went off while she was traveling on a commuter bus.

Russian security agency has identified two suicide bombers who are suspected of setting off two deadly blasts that killed and hurt dozens in the southern Russian city of Volgograd.

According to Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee, investigators tracked the bombings suspects back to their traffickers, whose identities were also confirmed.

The agency says that Asker Samedov and Suleiman Magomedov belonged to the notorious Buinaksk [a town lying 25 miles from Dagesan’s capital Makhachkala] ring operating in Northern Caucasus. Their identities were kept secret over security concerns.
