U.S. to keep 1,500 troops in Jordan. -A flood of refugees from Syria into Jordan has tested the Jordanian government...

The United States has about 1,500 U.S. troops in Jordan and they will remain there until the security situation improves, the White House told Congress on Friday.

The U.S. contingent in Jordan, which includes Patriot missile systems and fighter aircraft, is there to help the Jordanian government as it grapples with strains from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

A flood of refugees from Syria into Jordan has tested the Jordanian government of King Hussein, a close U.S. ally.

“These forces will remain in Jordan, in full coordination with the government of Jordan, until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer needed,” a White House report said.

The White House offered a glimpse into U.S. military deployments in various global hotspots as part of a required notification to Congress.

It said 200 U.S. military personnel are currently deployed to Niger to provide support for intelligence collection in assisting French forces conducting operations in Mali in the face of a lingering Islamist threat in northern Mali.

Some 120 U.S. military personnel are working with an African Union regional task force to try to apprehend Joseph Kony and other leaders of the Lord's Resistance Army.

Kony is wanted by the International Criminal court for war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in a guerrilla war in Uganda and neighboring states.

The U.S. forces involved in the operation are deployed to the Republic of South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, the White House said.

  1. Obama pledges $1bn in Jordan loan guarantees...

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday pledged $1 billion in loan guarantees for Middle East ally Jordan and the renewal of a five-year aid package.

The president made the announcement during his meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah at a summit at a California retreat, Reuters news agency reported.

Jordan is one of the United States' closest allies in the Middle East and is a regional player in diplomatic efforts seeking peace in the turbulent region. It is also one of the largest recipients of U.S. aid, collecting about $1 billion annually for the past five years, according to the Associated Press.

During his past week in Washington, the king met with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry, congressional leaders and others.

Jordan is one of two Arab countries, the other being Egypt, that has signed a peace treaty with Israel and King Abdullah has supported Kerry's efforts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal in recent months.

The king is also anxious for a political solution in next-door Syria. His country has been overwhelmed by Syrian refugees crossing the border to flee the bloodshed.

  2. Obama says considering new pressure on Syria's Assad...

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Friday he is considering new ways to pressure the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he pledged fresh U.S. assistance to Jordan's King Abdullah, whose country is reeling from the Syrian civil war.

Obama and Abdullah held talks at the Sunnylands retreat, the estate of the late philanthropist Walter Annenberg, in this desert region of California.

With the Syrian civil war a central focus of their talks, Obama told reporters with Abdullah seated beside him that he does not expect the conflict to be resolved any time soon and that "there are going to be some immediate steps that we have to take to help the humanitarian assistance there."

"There will be some intermediate steps that we can take applying more pressure to the Assad regime and we are going to be continuing to work with all the parties concerned to try to move forward on a diplomatic solution," Obama said.

Obama did not disclose what steps he has under consideration, but Secretary of State John Kerry said earlier while traveling in Asia that a set of new options are under discussion..........http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/15/us-usa-jordan-obama-idUSBREA1E04O20140215?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  3. Syria gunmen fire on Jordan troops at border...

Ten gunmen from Syria opened fire on troops patrolling an isolated border area in the north, the Associated Press reported a Jordanian army spokesman as saying.

It is the first time that Jordan publicly reports an armed attack from Syria, although there have been several smuggling incidents in recent months.

The spokesman said the patrols returned fire, wounding seven and arresting three.

He declined to disclose identities, but said the late Saturday shooting was in an isolated area “not used by Syrian refugees” fleeing to Jordan.

Pro-U.S. Jordan, only one of two Arab nations that has signed a peace treaty with Israel, is concerned that al-Qaeda or militants affiliated with its rival Shiite Lebanese Hezbollah may target it.

The spokesman insisted on anonymity Sunday, saying he is not allowed to comment on an ongoing investigation..............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/02/16/-Syria-gunmen-fire-on-Jordan-troops-at-border.html

  4. Background Briefing in Amman, Jordan...

SENIOR STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL TWO: So this is a background briefing previewing Secretary Kerry’s trip to Baghdad tomorrow. We have on the phone with us [Senior State Department Official One], who will be known here forward as senior State Department official number one. He’ll go do a quick overview of the trip and then we will take some questions.

With that, [Senior State Department Official One], go ahead.

SENIOR STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL ONE: Okay. Thanks, [Senior State Department Official Two]. I’ll just give a quick – just a quick preview of the trip, starting with tomorrow. And the Secretary will see here in Baghdad – he will see Prime Minister Maliki; he will see foreign minister Zebari; Ammar Hakim, who is the head of a Shia party called the Islamic Supreme Council in Iraq; he will speak to (inaudible), who’s one of the prominent Sunni leaders here; and also Deputy Prime Minister Salih Mutlaq, who also has a bloc of primarily Sunnis and won a number of seats in the most recent election.

So the stop in Baghdad has a couple of key themes. First of all, to emphasize our highest-level commitment to Iraq during this time of crisis. And that’s a commitment that is bedrock commitment under our Strategic Framework Agreement, and we’ll be discussing in more detail with the Iraqis the elements of our package, which the President announced the other day, some of the support we’ll be providing. And it’s also an opportunity for the Secretary to do person-to-person diplomacy with the key leaders and the key blocs as they work towards forming a new government along the constitutional timeline that they’re on.......................http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2014/06/228266.htm
