  1. African Refugees Protest Israeli Migrant Laws ....

Ten thousand African migrants packed a square in central Tel Aviv Sunday to march against what they say is harsh treatment by the Israeli government.

Many of the protesters carried signs demanding human rights and criticizing laws that place them in detention and forbid them to work.

Most of the Africans came from Eritrea and Sudan seeking asylum from poverty, violence and political chaos.

But Israeli authorities consider the migrants infiltrators and illegals. Officials have built a fence along the Egyptian border to try to keep them out.

Parliament passed a new law last month putting Africans without proper documents in indefinite detention and banning them from jobs.

The United Nations refugee agency and many Israelis criticize the new law as a violation.

  2. UN refugee agency urges Israel to reconsider new procedures for asylum seekers...

10 January 2014 – The United Nations refugee agency today warned that Israel could be breaking international law by limiting the rights of asylum-seekers with a new amendment to the country’s anti-infiltration law.

Of particular concern to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a provision in the new Amendment requiring asylum-seekers to reside in a so-called open residence facility.

“Since the facility was housing people who cannot be returned to their countries of origin for reasons of non-refoulement, the organization is concerned that this facility could, in effect, result in indefinite detention, with no release grounds,” UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards said in Geneva.

The facility, located in the Negev desert, also restricts movement by mandating people reside there, and report in three times per day, among other discipline measures.

Mr. Edwards said that UNHCR understands the challenges faced by Israel in managing the reception of migrants and asylum-seekers. However, it was important that the treatment of asylum-seekers “be in line with international refugee and human rights law,” he concluded.

Under the Amendment, new asylum-seekers arriving in an irregular manner will automatically be detained for at least a year, as will people whose conditional release visas have expired.

Difficulties in renewing visas are meanwhile growing, the spokesperson noted, with reports of long queues and limited access to visa services.

    1. UN warns Israel on new refugee law...

The UN Relief Agency UNHCR warned Israel on Friday over open-ended detention of refugees.

Under the new legislation passed last month, illegal immigrants without valid visas can be detained indefinitely.

"Indefinite detention certainly would be at odds with human rights norms," said Adrian Edwards, UNHCR spokesperson.

The United Nations last year called on Israel to change the refugee law, Edwards noted, adding that the organization is prepared to support refugees in exercising their legal rights.

African nationals in Israel have been protesting the new law over the last week.

It allows sending refugees to a desert prison and since its ratification over 300 hundred people have already been detained, British daily The Guardian reports.

Mostly Sudanese and Eritrean, nearly 53,000 refugees are currently in Israel according to the UNHCR.
