Στην επιστολή παραίτησης που απηύθυνε στον πρωθυπουργό Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον, ο υπουργός διαβεβαιώνει πως η οικιακή βοηθός τού είχε παρουσιάσει έγγραφα που ήταν εντάξει, όταν την είχε προσλάβει, το 2007, για να καθαρίζει το διαμέρισμά του στο Λονδίνο.
Οταν όμως θέλησε να τα ελέγξει και πάλι στην αρχή της φετινής χρονιάς, “δεδομένης της έμφασης που δίνεται σ’ αυτά τα θέματα” στο νομοσχέδιό του, αντελήφθη πως η οικιακή βοηθός –η εθνικότητα της οποίας δεν έγινε αμέσως γνωστή– του είχε παρουσιάσει πλαστά χαρτιά. “Παρόλο που ήμουν ανά πάσα στιγμή εντάξει με το νόμο, θεωρώ ότι, ως υπουργός Μετανάστευσης που υποβάλλει στο Κοινοβούλιο ένα νομοσχέδιο το οποίο θα σκληρύνει τους νόμους μας για τη μετανάστευση, οφείλω να έχω από τον εαυτό μου περισσότερες απαιτήσεις απ’ ό,τι από τους άλλους”, γράφει ο κ. Χάρπερ, ο οποίος ζητεί ακριβώς οι εργοδότες να συμμετάσχουν στην προσπάθεια ελέγχοντας προσεκτικά τα χαρτιά των μισθωτών τους.
“Αποφάσισα συνεπώς ότι το πιο αξιοπρεπές είναι για μένα να αποσυρθώ”, προσθέτει ο υπουργός, ζητώντας συγγνώμη για “τη δύσκολη θέση” στην οποία έφερε την κυβέρνηση του Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον.
Ο πρωθυπουργός αποδέχθηκε την παραίτησή του “με λύπη” και έκανε λόγο για μια “αξιέπαινη απόφαση”.
Το θέμα της μετανάστευσης βρίσκεται αυτή τη στιγμή στο κέντρο των πολιτικών συζητήσεων στη Βρετανία όπου οι συντηρητικοί δέχονται πίεση από το λαϊκιστικό κόμμα Ukip που τάσσεται κατά της μετανάστευσης.

ReplyDeleteKurz vor der Europawahl muss der britische Premier Cameron eine peinliche Niederlage hinnehmen. Sein Einwanderungsminister Mark Harper beschäftigte eine ausländische Putzfrau – ohne Arbeitserlaubnis.
n Großbritannien ist ausgerechnet der Staatssekretär für Einwanderung über die Beschäftigung einer ausländischen Putzfrau gestolpert. Der Migrations-Experte Mark Harper trat am Samstag zurück.
Er hatte eine Frau als Reinigungskraft beschäftigt, die keine unbefristete Aufenthaltserlaubnis in Großbritannien vorweisen konnte, wie er selbst mitteilte.

UK immigration minister resigns after employing illegal immigrant cleaner...
ReplyDeleteUK Immigration Minister Mark Harper, who launched the notorious “go home or face arrest” campaign, has resigned from his post after it materialized that his cleaner did not have permission to be working in the UK.
Harper handed in his resignation to UK Prime Minister David Cameron. A statement released by Downing Street on Saturday said that there had been “no suggestion” that Harper had “knowingly” employed an illegal immigrant.
Cameron said that it was with “regret” that the resignation was accepted. Harper will remain an MP in his constituency.
Controversy erupted last year surrounding an advertising campaign spearheaded by Harper. Vans were deployed in six London boroughs bearing billboards instructing illegal immigrants to “go home or face arrest.”
The drive provoked an enormous backlash, and a UK advertising watchdog eventually banned it on the grounds that it was “misleading” - despite the majority of complainants denouncing it as racist or offensive.
The minister conceded that he should have checked his house staff’s documents more thoroughly to ensure their validity. He took the cleaner on in 2007, but decided it would be “prudent” to look over the papers once more, as the much-debated immigration bill passed through parliament.
“Although I complied with the law at all times, I consider that as Immigration Minister, who is taking legislation through Parliament which will toughen up our immigration laws, I should hold myself to a higher standard than expected of others,” Harper wrote.
