Turkey PM wants reformation of UN Security Council. -Erdogan said that Turkey houses around 700,000 Syrian refugees

Turkey's prime minister called for reformation of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, saying that permanent members were obstructing humanitarian aid from getting to Syria.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan - talking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin - said that although the U.N. is the largest peace organization in the world, it could not take essential steps "primarily due to the inaction of permanent members of the U.N. Security Council."

"These permanent members are obstructed due to the wrong information which shows reformation is needed at the council. Unless it is reformed, the U.N. Security Council" will be at the mercy of a permanent member with veto power.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said the situation in Syria was "inconceivable".
"We want to further advance the unity of international community of states, especially the UN Security Council," she said.
Erdogan - on a two day trip to Germany - mentioned the Anadolu Agency's joint exclusive which revealed 55,000 photographs of torture victims - allegedly at the hands of the Syrian regime.
"How can humanity watch this slaughter as if they are watching a football match," he said.
Erdogan said that Turkey houses around 700,000 Syrian refugees, that 220,000 of them live in tent and container cities, and Turkey has spent $2.5 billion providing for them so far.
  • "The United Nations has given US$130 million. Whether it aids or not, we will continue to host our Syrian neighbors with an open-door policy."

  1. Russian Foreign Ministry: Ceasefire agreement in Homs concluded for 72 hours....

Under the agreement, children, women and men on the wrong side of fifty-five, as well as injured people can leave the area of military actions without delay.

MOSCOW, February 07. /ITAR-TASS/. A ceasefire agreement has been reached for 72 hours in the Syrian city of Homs, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Friday.

Russia “expresses satisfaction with reports saying a humanitarian pause had been declared in Homs from February 6”, the report says.

“Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi and U.N. coordinator to Syria Jacob el-Helo reached an agreement on ceasefire for 72 hours and humanitarian contribution to residents of Homs’ Old Town due to the non-easy talks that the Russian Embassy in Damascus had played an energetic role in,” the ministry said.

Under the agreement, children, women and men on the wrong side of fifty-five, as well as injured people can leave the area of military actions without delay. “An official of the Syrian Foreign Ministry said they would be taken to temporary accommodation centres and delivered foodstuffs and given medical assistance. Old Town’s residents, who prefer to stay, will be rendered humanitarian aid,” the report says.

  2. UN poised to evacuate civilians from Syria's besieged Homs...

HOMS: Scores of trapped civilians awaited evacuation Friday from besieged rebel-held areas of Syria's third city Homs as Damascus finally confirmed it will join new peace talks next week.

The evacuation is part of a surprise deal struck by the United Nations with Damascus on Thursday after months of negotiations that will also see desperately needed aid delivered to the rebel enclave during a "humanitarian pause" in fighting.

The first consignment of food and medicine will reach the hundreds of civilians who have been under army blockade for more than 600 days before Saturday, Homs governor Talal Barazi told AFP.

The relief supplies had been held up in a UN warehouse in a government-held area of Homs just kilometres (miles) away from the rebel-held Old City while the negotiations for relief access dragged on.

At least 1,200 children, women and elderly people are among some 2,500 civilians who have been trapped under siege, surviving on little but olives, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.................http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/un-poised-to-evacuate/986396.html

  3. Aid to Syria’s Homs halted after fighting breaks out...

Aid that was expected to enter the central Syrian city of Homs was halted after fighting broke out on Saturday, as Syrian military aircraft bombarded the northern city of Aleppo with barrel bombs, killing 15.

Syrian activists and officials said mortars were fired early on Saturday in the besieged Old City of Homs, in spite of a ceasefire which is intended to allow civilians to be evacuated and aid to be delivered to people confined in the city’s central areas.

A Homs activist who identified himself as Samer al-Homsy said Syrian regime forces had fired 11 rockets toward the rebel-held Hamidiyeh quarter of the city, halting the shipments, according to the Associated Press.

Both sides blamed the shelling on each other, although there were no immediate reports of casualties..............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/02/08/Syria-s-Homs-to-get-aid-after-evacuations.html
