Putin Signs Crimea Reunification Treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of Crimea signed a treaty Tuesday reunifying Crimea with Russia.

The Russian parliament is expected to ratify the treaty later on Tuesday.

Putin signed a decree Monday recognizing Crimea as an independent state, following a referendum Sunday that saw voters on the peninsula overwhelmingly support secession and reunification with Russia.

Crimea’s leadership has refused to recognize as legitimate the new government in Ukraine that came to power following the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych last month, instead declaring independence and seeking reunification with Russia.

  • Crimea and Sevastopol will join Russia as two separate regions, President Putin says, the treaty is signed.

Crimea was represented by Prime Minister Sergey Aksenov and Sevastopol mayor Aleksey Chaly, who signed the treaty. The two were accompanied by Crimean top official Vladimir Konstantinov.

“Since the adoption of the Russian Federation Republic of Crimea in structure of the Russian Federation two new entities - of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Federal importance Sevastopol – have been created,” the text of the treaty reads.

The document will be sent for approval to the constitutional court, and then to ratification in the parliaments of the two countries.

  • The transition period will be acting till January, 1 of 2015.

  8. Venice might become independent from Italy....

More than one million citizens of Venice and its surrounding regions are voting in an online referendum to become independent from Italy. Whilst waiting for International validation, a unilateral Declaration of Independence is to be proclaimed on Friday 21st at the end of the polls, should ‘Yes’ to independence be the majority of voters’ choice.

The online vote, organized by local independence parties, is not legally binding but aims to galvanize support for a bill calling for a referendum on whether the region of Veneto should split from Italy.

"We no longer want to be part of a country that has gone to the wall. Nothing works anymore," Indipendenza Veneta party coordinator Nicola Gardin said.

"Italy is weighed down by an enormous level of public debt, thousands of businesses have closed, we have lost count of the number of people who have committed suicide in Veneto," he said.

The region pays around 71 billion euros ($98 billion) in taxes to Rome, 21 billion euros more than it receives in investment and services.

The latest polls show that - of the 3.8 million people eligible to vote in the region - around 60 percent are in favour of independence.

Despite protests that an attempt to split from Italy could be unconstitutional, the governor of the Veneto region has told Italian media that secession is an option under international law.

"The push for independence comes from the people. It is a democratic request born of Rome's indifference," governor Luca Zaia told Liberoquotidiano.

Veneto is today one of the most productive and industrialized areas of Europe with provinces like Vicenza and Treviso exporting as much as Portugal or Greece together.

A taxation nearing 70% of small and medium enterprises (almost the totality of Venetian private industry) have caused a sharp recession and closure of several businesses in the last few years.
