  1. Vietnam accuses China of sinking fishing boat...

A Chinese fishing vessel rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing boat in the disputed South China Sea on Tuesday, a Vietnamese state official said, amid a tense territorial confrontation over Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig.

“I confirm that the fishing vessel was rammed. The 10 fishermen on board are on land now. They are safe. The ship sank,” a Vietnamese maritime safety official told AFP.

Monday’s incident was the first reported sinking of a ship since the dispute flared in early May.

Dozens of Chinese and Vietnamese vessels, including many civilian and fishing boats, have engaged in repeated skirmishes near the giant oil rig, including reported rammings and the use of water cannon.

The reports in the Tuoi Tre newspaper and other media said the incident occurred around 30 kilometres (18 miles) from a large oil rig China deployed May 1 in a section of the sea claimed by both countries. The move by Beijing infuriated Hanoi and set off violent anti-China protests.

Vietnam sent patrol ships to confront the rig, and China has deployed scores of vessels to protect it. The two sides have been involved in a tense standoff, occasionally colliding with each other.

    'Extremely dangerous act'

The countries have long sparred over who owns what in the oil and gas-rich waters.

Incidents between fishing crews are quite common. Tuoi Tre said about 40 Chinese fishing boats surrounded a group of Vietnamese ones on Monday afternoon. It said one them rammed into the Vietnamese, tossing 10 fishermen into the water and sinking the boat. The fishermen were picked up by the other Vietnamese boats and there were no injuries..............http://www.france24.com/en/20140527-vietnam-accuses-china-sinking-fishing-boat/?f24_member_id=1088576024689&ns_campaign=nl_quot_en&ns_fee=0&ns_linkname=20140527_vietnam_accuses_china_sinking_fishing_boat&ns_mchannel=email_marketing&ns_source=NLQ_20140527

Vietnam says a Chinese vessel has rammed and sunk a Vietnamese fishing boat in the disputed South China Sea, near where Beijing has placed an oil rig.

Hanoi maritime officials say 10 fishermen had to be rescued after their boat was struck Monday by the Chinese fishing vessel, about 30 kilometers from where Beijing has stationed the rig.

A Chinese government official later told the state-run Xinhua news agency that the Vietnamese boat "capsized after harassing and colliding with a Chinese fishing boat," around 5 pm local time Monday........http://www.voanews.com/content/hanoi-chinese-ship-rams-sinks-vietnamese-fishing-boat/1923216.html
