China confident in fighting terrorists. (FM spokesman Hong Lei)

China said it has the confidence and capability to crack down on terrorists after the latest terrorist attack in northwest China killed 31 people and injured 94 others Thursday morning.

Two vehicles without license plates broke through roadside fences and plowed into people at an open air market in Urumqi at 7:50 am, and explosive devices were set off, said a statement issued by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's publicity department.

Medical resources are being mobilized to save the injured, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news briefing.

"The violence, a further indication of the terrorists' anti-human , anti-society and anti-civilization nature, should be condemned by the Chinese people and the international community," Hong said.

In response to the attack, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to severely punish terrorists and spare no efforts in maintaining stability, asking local authorities to solve the case quickly, put the injured under proper care and offer condolences to families of the victims.

The Chinese government will continue to work hard in fighting terrorism and try its best to safeguard social stability, Xi said.

"The Chinese government has the confidence and capability to crack down on the audacious terrorists, who will never achieve their purposes," Hong said.

  1. Chinese police shot dead 13 attackers in the country's restive Xinjiang region, after the group drove a car into a Kashgar police station and detonated an explosive device, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.....

Three police officers were "lightly wounded" in the attack on Saturday morning, but there were no casualties among the public, the news agency said citing the local government.

"The gangsters drove a vehicle to ram the building of the public security bureau of Yecheng County in southern Xinjiang and set off explosives," it said.

China has been cracking down after a spate of recent attacks centred around the far-western region of Xinjiang. Chinese authorities executed over a dozen people for terrorist attacks in the region earlier this month and three others for an attack on Beijing's central Tiananmen Square.

  2. China, Uighurs Differ Over Accounts of Unrest in Xinjiang ...

The Chinese government and exiled Uighur groups are offering differing explanations about what led to the latest instance of unrest in the troubled Xinjiang region, where scores of people were killed this week.

The official Xinhua news agency said the violence began when a mob armed with knives and axes attacked a police station, government offices, and civilians in two towns Monday in Shache county, killing dozens of civilians.

Xinhua said police responded with gunfire, killing dozens of members of the mob.

It said an initial investigation indicates the incident was a "premeditated terrorist attack," language commonly used by Beijing to describe unrest in Xinjiang.

The government's account was disputed by exiled Uighur groups.

In a statement, the Uyghur American Association condemned what it called the "use of excessive state violence." It said the residents were protesting against Beijing's "heavy-handed Ramadan crackdown" and "extra-judicial use of lethal force in recent weeks."

Quoting local sources, the association said more than 20 Uighurs were killed and at least 70 arrested during the incident.

China severely limits foreign media reporting in the region, making it difficult to independently confirm those numbers.

    Media reports

Although the attack took place early Monday, it took nearly a day for even official media to report on the region's latest violence, which has become a very sensitive topic in China.

Around 200 people have died in unrest over the past year in Xinjiang, home to Muslim minority Uighurs.

The violence has led Beijing to launch a year-long crackdown on what it calls terrorism in the region. Hundreds have been detained in the crackdown so far...................http://www.voanews.com/content/china-uighurs-differ-over-accounts-of-unrest-in-xinjiang/1967835.html

  3. Nearly 100 casualties in Xinjiang clash: Uighur group...

A clash in China's far western region of Xinjiang, home to the country's mostly Muslim Uighur minority, left nearly 100 people dead and wounded, an exile group said on Wednesday (July 30).

Chinese state media reported late Tuesday that dozens of civilians and assailants were killed and injured in what it described as a "terrorist attack" in the region, saying a gang armed with knives and axes had attacked a police station and government offices, before moving on to a township.

"Police officers at the scene shot dead dozens of members of the mob," the official news agency Xinhua said of the violence, said to have occurred early Monday.

Xinhua did not give a precise breakdown of the casualties, and information in Xinjiang is often difficult to verify independently but Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the World Uyghur Congress, an exile group, said the toll had climbed significantly.....................http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/nearly-100-casualties-in/1288852.html
