United Ossetia Receives Absolute Majority in Parliamentary Elections

The United Ossetia party received the absolute majority of votes in Sunday's parliamentary elections in the former Georgian republic, to obtain 20 seats of the 34-seat South Ossetian parliament, according to the central election commission. 

“The United Ossetia receives 20 out of 34 seats, its runner-up Unity of the People gets six seats, two other parties, Unity and Nykhas, receive four seats each,” the commission reported.

Nine parties were competing Sunday for seats in the parliament, which is elected under a proportional representation system for a five-year term.


Some 33,000 people in the republic, which has a population of about 70,000, were eligible to vote.

• International observers came to South Ossetia to monitor the voting process. The Russian Federation Council delegation said Sunday that the work at the polling stations was organized properly and the results of the elections should be recognized as objective.

Meanwhile the EU issued a statement saying it did not recognize constitutional and legal frameworks within which the parliamentary elections in South Ossetia were held.

• Moscow officially recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another former autonomous region of Georgia in August 2008, following Georgia’s military aggression against the republic's capital Tskhinval. In response Tbilisi severed diplomatic ties with Moscow.

Most UN member countries, as well as international organizations including NATO do not recognize South Ossetia as an independent state.
