Szczecin, on the north-west coast of Poland, hosts the headquarters of
NATO's Multinational Corps North-East and is seen as the centre of the
Alliance's eastern defences, NATO deputy secretary general Alexander
Vershbow said Thursday in Szczecin.
Earlier in September, at the NATO summit in Newport, Wales, a Readiness Action Plan was passed which foresees the creation of a rapid response spearhead to tackle threats on the Alliance's eastern flank.
Vershbow, in Szczecin for a Baltic security meeting hosted by the Multinational Corps, said that in the readiness plan there would be a raised military presence in Poland and the Baltic states. He added that the Multinational Corps HQ will coordinate defence in the region as a top-level command unit capable of immediate response to threats.
Asked if the Multinational corps will be in command of the NATO spearhead, Vershbow said no decisions on the matter had yet been made.
Multinational Corps commander general Boguslaw Samol informed that detailed plans regarding the unit's future tasks should be known within several weeks.
Founded in 1999 by Poland, Denmark and Germany, the Multinational Corps North-East comprises 14 countries, including Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the United States, Hungary, etc..
