Russia launches criminal case on genocide of Russian speakers in south-eastern Ukraine

Russia’s Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case on genocide of the Russian-speaking population in the embattled southeast of Ukraine, the committee’s spokesman Vladimir Markin said Monday.
“The Main Investigative Directorate of the Russian Investigative Committee has launched criminal proceedings on the genocide of the Russian-speaking population living in the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s republics [Article 357 of Russia’s Criminal Code],” Markin told ITAR-TASS.

Investigators established that “in the period from April 12, 2014 until now, in violation of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide [CPPCG], as well as other international legal acts condemning genocide, unidentified persons from among the top political and military leadership of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Armed Forces, National Guard and Right Sector [far-right ultranationalist organization] gave orders designed to eliminate Russian-speaking nationals residing on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics”.

Use of multiple launch rocket systems

Vladimir Markin also said at least 2,500 residents of south-eastern Ukraine have been killed as a result of multiple launch systems attacks.
  • “Investigators established that killings of Russian-speaking citizens were made with the use of the Grad and Uragan multiple launch rocket systems, aviation unguided rockets with cluster warheads, Tochka-U tactical missiles and other types of heavy offensive armaments of indiscriminate effect,” Markin told ITAR-TASS.
  • “As a result of these actions, at least 2,500 people died,” he said.
Besides, Markin added, “over 500 residential houses, utilities and life support facilities, hospitals, child, general education institutions were destroyed in the Donetsk and Luhansk [People’s] republics, as a result of which more than 300,000 residents who feared for their life and health were forced to leave their permanent places of residence and seek refuge on the territory of the Russian Federation”.

  2. (Reuters) - Ukrainian state prosecutors said on Tuesday they had opened a criminal investigation against a Russian law enforcement agency, accusing it of supporting separatist and "terrorist" groups in the east of the country....

The move appeared to be a tit-for-tat response to a criminal case launched on Monday by Russia against "unidentified representatives of Ukraine's senior political and military leadership", National Guard and nationalist organizations, in which it accused them of committing "genocide".

The two legal investigations will further ratchet up tensions between the two ex-Soviet neighbors and put pressure on a ceasefire agreed on Sept. 5 between Kiev's forces and pro-Russian separatists that has been marred by daily skirmishes and artillery shelling.

In a statement, the Ukrainian prosecutor general's office said it had opened a criminal investigation against officials of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, a law enforcement body that answers only to President Vladimir Putin.

The statement accused the Russian officials of "carrying out illegal interference" in the work of Ukraine's law enforcement bodies and armed forces.

"(This interference) is aimed at aiding the terrorist organizations 'Donetsk People's Republic' and 'Luhansk People's Republic' in their criminal activities and obstructing the performance of duties by government officials," it said.........................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/09/30/us-ukraine-crisis-prosecutors-idUSKCN0HP0PK20140930?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  3. Ukraine’s criminal case against Russian investigators condemned as inadequate....

Committee on Tuesday condemned the criminal investigation that Kiev launched against members of the commitee into alleged interference in the work of Ukraine's law enforcement bodies.
The Ukrainian investigation was opened on Monday shortly after the Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case into genocide of the Russian-speaking population in eastern Ukraine.
“The inadequate defensive reaction of a group of individuals hidden behind the sign of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office forces us to study the issue of their role in covering up the facts of the genocide of the Russian-speaking population,” the committee’s spokesman Vladimir Markin said......................http://www.ellanodikhs.net/2014/09/ukraines-criminal-case-against-russian.html
