In an article published in the Atlantic magazine, anonymous officials described Netanyahu as a “chicken**** prime minister,” adding that he is more interested in political gain than peace.
The top-level officials are reportedly “red hot” with anger over Israel’s settlement policies in addition to the actions of the PM and his cabinet.
The comments were made to U.S. journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, who warned that relations between the two long-time allies were in a “full-blown crisis.”
“The good thing about Netanyahu is that he’s scared to launch wars. The bad thing about him is that he won’t do anything to reach an accommodation with the Palestinians or with the Sunni Arab states,” one official, reported to be a high-ranking member of the Obama administration, said.
Agitated by the remarks, Netanyahu insisted he was “under attack simply for defending Israel.”
“I am being attacked because I am willing to defend the State of Israel,” he claimed.
Netanyahu added that he “laud[ed] the deep connection we have with the United States,” which has been in constant deterioration over the past few months.
Escalating tensions

ReplyDeleteWashington (CNN) -- Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon traveled to Washington last week expecting to see top Obama administration officials.
Instead, he found himself with a lot of time on his hands.
The White House denied him meetings with Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice. ReplyDeleteΗ προσβλητική έκφραση που χρησιμοποίησε ένας μη κατονομαζόμενος αξιωματούχος των ΗΠΑ αναφερόμενος στον Ισραηλινό πρωθυπουργό Μπενιαμίν Νετανιάχου -τον περιέγραψε ως έναν «δειλό» πολιτικό- προκάλεσε σήμερα την έντονη αντίδραση του επικεφαλής της κυβέρνησης του Ισραήλ, ο οποίος είναι μάλλον συνηθισμένος στις διενέξεις με την κυβέρνηση του Αμερικανού προέδρου Μπαράκ Ομπάμα.
Η δήλωση αυτή, την οποία έκανε ο Αμερικανός αξιωματούχος σε έναν δημοσιογράφο του περιοδικού The Atlantic, ακολούθησε έναν μήνα έντονων αντεγκλήσεων ανάμεσα στην κυβέρνηση Νετανιάχου και την Ουάσινγκτον με αφορμή ιδίως την επέκταση των εποικισμών στην κατεχόμενη Ανατολική Ιερουσαλήμ, την οποία οι Παλαιστίνιοι επιδιώκουν να ορίσουν ως την πρωτεύουσα του μελλοντικού τους κράτους που θα συμπεριλαμβάνει τη Δυτική Όχθη και τη Λωρίδα της Γάζας.
«Το θέμα με τον Μπίμπι είναι πως είναι δειλός», δήλωσε ο μη κατονομαζόμενος αξιωματούχος της κυβέρνησης των ΗΠΑ, χρησιμοποιώντας το προσωνύμιο του Νετανιάχου και μια προσβολή που είναι βέβαιο ότι θα κάνει τον πρώην καταδρομέα, που έχει σπουδάσει στην Αμερική, να κοκκινίσει ως τα αυτιά.
«Το καλό με τον Νετανιάχου είναι πως φοβάται να εξαπολύσει πολέμους», είπε ο μη κατονομαζόμενος Αμερικανός αξιωματούχος, προφανώς αναφερόμενος στα υπονοούμενα που είχε αφήσει στο παρελθόν το Ισραήλ για το ενδεχόμενο να προχωρήσει σε μια στρατιωτική επιχείρηση για την καταστροφή των πυρηνικών εγκαταστάσεων του Ιράν. «Το άσχημο είναι ότι δεν θα κάνει απολύτως τίποτε για να φθάσει σε μια διευθέτηση με τους Παλαιστίνιους ή με τα σουνιτικά αραβικά κράτη», συνέχισε.
Ο Νετανιάχου, φέρεται να είπε ο ίδιος Αμερικανός αξιωματούχος, ενδιαφέρεται μόνο να «προστατεύεται ο ίδιος από πολιτικές ήττες... δεν έχει θάρρος».
Οι Ισραηλινοί ηγέτες δεν συνηθίζουν να απαντούν σε σχόλια τα οποία αποδίδονται σε μη κατονομαζόμενους αξιωματούχους. Αλλά ο Νετανιάχου αναφέρθηκε άμεσα σε αυτά τα σχόλια, σε μια συνεδρίαση του κοινοβουλίου του Ισραήλ αφιερωμένη στην επέτειο της δολοφονίας ενός Ισραηλινού κυβερνητικού υπουργού από έναν Παλαιστίνιο το 2001..................http://www.capital.gr/News.asp?id=2143360
