Pakistani president, army congratulate Malala on winning Nobel Peace Prize

Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and the army Friday congratulated teenage education rights activist Malala Yousafzai on wining the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly Friday to Yousafzai, who survived being shot by the Taliban, and to India's Kailash Satyarthi for their championing of children's rights.

"President Mamnoon Hussain felicitated Malala Yousafzai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize and said that Malala has made her parents, her colleagues, every proponent of girls' right to education, and indeed the entire nation proud today," a statement from the presidential office said.

In his felicitation message the president lauded the courage of young Malala who refused to be intimidated by the extremists and continued her struggle for girls' right to education.

The president called Malala a symbol of courage and determination, saying she symbolized keenness of Pakistani girls to seek education for their real empowerment and rejection of all kinds of discrimination and exploitation.

The president expressed the hope that the conferment of the prestigious award would not only serve as a great recognition of Malala's relentless struggle but would also inspire every Pakistani and indeed every supporter of girls' right to education to make even greater effort for this noble cause.

The Pakistan Army has also congratulated the teenage education rights activist for becoming the first Pakistani to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Congrats; Malala becomes second Pakistani to win coveted Nobel Prize. Except for terrorists, all Pakistanis want their children in school," the military spokesman, Maj. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said in a tweet posted on his Twitter.
