Russian foreign minister says he hopes wisdom will get upper hand in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Sunday he did not think it is worth to attach too much significance to Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko’s public pronouncements, since passions are running high ahead of the parliamentary elections.
“Whatever we might think about the developments before the presidential elections in May, Poroshenko is the elected president of Ukraine. He is recognized in this capacity by all,” Lavrov said in an interview with Russia’s NTV television channel. “Russian President Vladimir Putin maintains regular dialogue with him. They have met each other personally at various events. They have active and fruitful telephone contacts.”

Commenting on Poroshenko’s pronouncements in public, Lavrov noted that “Ukraine is having an election campaign, passions are running high, arguments “below the belt” are being used.” “Regrettably, many are trying to play the nationalist card and whip up tensions in society,” he said. “That is why I would rather not attach too much significance to public pronouncements.”
“Let us wait until elections are over to see what the Ukrainian parliament will look like. I hope the Ukrainian people’s wisdom will get the upper hand,” he added.
