Incumbent PM says he congratulates Iohannis for victory following Romania's presidential run-off

Romania's Social Democrat leader, incumbent Prime Minister Victor Ponta said late Sunday that he congratulated earlier Klaus Iohannis for victory and thanked the Romanians who came to the polls in the presidential run-off.

"I called Mr. Johannis, I congratulated him for the victory," he said at the entrance of his party headquarters in Bucharest, stressing that "people are always right."

The prime minister called on the demonstrators to go home, as they "have no reason" to protest anymore.

Presidential run-off was held in Romania on Sunday. Ponta, 42, runs for presidency under the banner of the center-left Alliance of Social Democrats, the National Union for the Progress of Romania and the Conservatives, while 55-year-old Iohannis is backed by the center-right Christian Liberal Alliance, comprised of the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Liberal Party.

The exit polls showed that the two have got almost the same score. Among the four exit polls conducted by main agencies for different TV stations, two of them showed that Ponta narrowly won the runoff, while the other two resulted in the victory of Iohannis.

Yet, local sociologist Alfred Bulai deemed Johannis has probably higher chances of winning the run-off at the end of counting of votes.

According to him, at a very large presence in voting, the additional ballots are more against the Social Democrat leader.

Furthermore, the diaspora will mostly vote for Johannis, as in the first round, official Agerpres news agency cited Bulai as reporting.

Local political analyst Radu Magdin stated that the score announced by the exit-polls is very tight, and the competition between Ponta and Iohannis "will play out" until the end of the vote count.

"Categorically the votes in the diaspora count and most probably a lot of votes will come from there for Klaus Iohannis, it remains to be seen to what degree," Magdin was quoted as saying by Agerpres.

The presidential run-off was held two weeks after the first round of elections when a total of 14 candidates had competed for the state's top position and the leading two candidates remained for the runoff. Voter turnout nationwide in the run-off reached 62.04 percent, 8.88 percent higher than in the first round.

Romania's president is elected every five years under the constitution, with a maximum of two consecutive terms allowed. Incumbent President Traian Basescu was first elected in the 2004 and re-elected in 2009.

  2. Iohannis urges corruption crackdown ...

Romania's incoming president Klaus Iohannis urged parliament on Monday to scrap a corruption amnesty bill, moving swiftly to make good on a campaign promise and allay EU fears over graft in the country.

The 55-year-old Iohannis had promised during the campaign to safeguard the independence of Romania's judicial system and the fragile progress made in tackling corruption.

The European Union has raised concerns about a failure to tackle rampant high-level graft in Romania and Bulgaria, its two poorest members. Both have been kept outside the passport-free Schengen Zone since entering the EU in 2007............http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/892299.shtml

  3. The Romanian High Court of Cassation and Justice on Tuesday announced it would postpone for November 25 the incompatibility case of Sibiu city mayor Klaus Iohannis...

The information, published in the supreme court's information system, is widely taken over by local media, including official Agerpres news agency.

The Supreme Court initially scheduled the first hearing for Nov. 18, two days after the presidential runoff.

The case reached the Supreme Court after the Alba Iulia Court of Appeal nullified a National Integrity Agency (ANI) report which found Iohannis was in a state of office incompatibility. The ANI appealed but the case was delayed.

In April 2013, the ANI found Iohannis in a state of incompatibility for simultaneously holding the office of Sibiu mayor as well as acting as city representative in the general shareholder of the city's sewage, water and marketplace administration corporations.

Under relevant existing laws, the office of mayor is incompatible with the position of representative of a territorial administrative unit in the general shareholder of the corporations of local interest or representative of the government in the general shareholder of a commercial company of national interest.

A person found incompatible loses the right to hold a public office or position for three years after dismissal or after the rightful end of a term in office.

The Supreme Court will have the final say on whether Iohannis was in a state of incompatibility or if the ANI report will be canceled.

If the Supreme Court pronounced him incompatible, though local analysts believe that this probability is small, Romania will face an unprecedented political situation, as the country will have to organize new presidential elections.

The presidential runoff was held in Romania on Nov. 16. Iohannis, backed by the center-right Christian Liberal Alliance, won the elections against incumbent Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
