Ukraine decides to sue Russia for 'trillions' at courts

 Ukraine will sue Russia at international courts to seek compensation for damage it caused in the country, Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday.

The prime minister made the comments at a Ukrainian cabinet meeting.

"We have already filed two lawsuits against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights," Yatsenyuk said.

He said that another application with the UN International Court of Justice was currently in progress.

"Russia finances terrorism in Ukraine, and has breached the UN’s International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism," he said.

The two applications -- submitted back in March and June, respectively -- are about the alleged annexation of Crimea by Russia, and the ongoing developments in eastern Ukraine.

• "We are going to seek trillions in compensation for the damage incurred," Yatsenyuk said.

The Kiev administration alleges that the Kremlin supports and arms the pro-Russian separatists in the country. Russia denies the claim.

More than 4,000 people have been killed and around 9,000 have been wounded in the conflict between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine since mid-April, according to a UN report.

The conflict has also caused massive damage to the infrastructure, which, the Ukrainian government said in September, would cost around $800 million to restore.

Ukraine's Justice Minister Pavlo Petyrenko had announced in early June that Ukraine lost $1.8 trillion from the annexation of Crimea -- a sum which has continued to increase since then.
