EU approves fresh sanctions on Crimea

The European Union (EU) on Thursday imposed "substantial" additional sanctions on investment, services and trade with Crimea and Sevastopol, saying investment in Crimea or Sevastopol is outlawed from December 20.
"This is to reinforce the EU's policy of not recognizing their illegal annexation by Russia and follows a conclusion by the Foreign Affairs Council of 17 November," an EU official statement said.

The fresh sanctions mean that Europeans and EU-based companies may no more buy real estate or entities in Crimea, finance Crimean companies or supply related services.

In addition, EU operators will no more be permitted to offer tourism services in Crimea or Sevastopol.

In particular, European cruise ships may no more call at ports in the Crimean peninsula, except in case of emergency. This applies to "all ships owned or controlled by a European" or "flying the flag of a member state", while the existing cruise contracts may still be honored until March 20.

It has also been prohibited to export certain goods and technology concerning transport, telecommunications and energy sectors or the exploration and production of oil, gas and mineral resources, to Crimean companies or for use in Crimea.

"Technical assistance, brokering, construction or engineering services related to infrastructure in the same sectors must not be provided," the statement added.

These measures add to an import ban on goods from Crimea and Sevastopol, imposed in June, as well as restrictions introduced in July on trade and investment related to certain economic sectors and infrastructure projects.

  3. Sanctions against Crimea don't know difference between chalk and cheese ...

On December 19, the Official Journal of the European Union published a message about the introduction of new sanctions against the Crimea. European officials decided to ban investment in the Crimean economy, exports of Crimean goods there (if they are not certified in Ukraine). Most importantly, European citizens were barred from visiting the Crimea.

The reason, of course, is Russia's policy to reunify with the peninsula. The purpose of the new sanctions, apparently, is to complicate the life of Crimean residents to make them want to go back to Ukraine, to the delight of Kiev and its patrons in Brussels and Washington.

Just how justified are these hopes? One may say at once that the Crimea has never produced any goods that could be competitive enough to be exported to the West. Tourism has always been the main source of income for the Crimea. However, tourism in the Crimea has never been highly important in the life of European citizens.

In the last "peaceful" year, Crimean resorts and spas welcomed about six million people. Two-thirds of them - four million people - were citizens of Ukraine, followed by 300 thousand Russian and 250 thousand Belarusian tourists. The rest - 500 thousand tourists - came from the EU, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Israel and other countries...............http://english.pravda.ru/society/stories/22-12-2014/129355-sanctions_crimea-0/
