Investigative Committee Opens Criminal Case Against Ukrainian Officials

Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against three Ukrainian officials for public calls for terrorist activity, committee's spokesperson Vladimir Markin said Saturday.

"The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, upon obtaining data on Ukrainian deputies Yury Beryoza, Andrei Levus and Igor Mosiychuk, has opened a criminal case for an offense under Article 205.2 of Russia's Criminal Code [public calls for terrorist activities or public approval of terrorism]," Markin said.

In particular, Mosiychuk, a paramilitary battalion commander and a lawmaker representing the nationalist Radical Party, said that "being in the state of war, Ukraine should encourage opening a second and third front in the Caucasus and Central Asia".

On Thursday, three cars of armed militants attacked a road patrol station in Grozny, in Russia's southern Republic of Chechnya. The attackers then found shelter in the city's Press House.

The operation to repel the attack claimed the lives of at least 14 law enforcement officers, with 36 injured, according to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. A total of 11 militants are said to have been killed in the operation.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the attack and offered his condolences to the people and government of Russia.
