Pakistan ends death penalty moratorium in terror cases

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved implementation of death penalties for convicted terrorists in terrorism-related cases, state television reported Wednesday.

The Prime Minister took the decision ahead of a meeting of top political leaders in northwestern city of Peshawar where Taliban militants attacked an army school and killed 141 people including 132 children.

Pakistan had imposed a moratorium on capital punishment in 2008 and officials said dozens of death penalties have been pending since then. Besides, nearly 8,000 people currently imprisoned on death row, according to officials and legal groups.

The prime minister, who has been in Peshawar to personally monitor the security forces operation against the gunmen on Tuesday convened the meeting there to seek opinion and support of the political leaders to deal with terrorism.

"I want to convey a message to terrorists that their coward attacks and killing of innocent people cannot shake our determination to wipe out terrorism," the prime minister said in his opening remarks at the conference.

The meeting will discuss ways to form a strategy to stop terrorist activities and flush out all terrorists from the country, the PM office said.

It will also review measures to beef up security for all important buildings, education institutions and to protect life and property of the people.

He told political leaders that his government had given a chance to the peace talks with the Taliban, however, the Taliban continued attacks pushed the process to a failure.

"My government will take the ongoing military operations against the terrorists to a logical conclusion," Sharif said as the country mourns for those killed in the terrorist attack.

Sharif disclosed that the Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif, left for Kabul on Wednesday to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and ISAF commanders to discuss the situation arising out of the terror attack.
