UN Palestinian draft resolution defeated (The US and Australia voted against)

A Palestinian draft resolution calling for Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories by late 2017 has been defeated in the UN Security Council after failing to get sufficient votes in favour.
Even if the draft had received the minimum nine votes in favour, it would have been defeated by the vote against it by the United States, one of the five veto-wielding permanent members.

There were eight votes in favour, two votes against and five abstentions.

France, China and Russia were among the countries that supported the text setting a 12-month deadline for negotiations on a final peace deal with Israel.

Australia joined the US in voting against the measure.

  1. Russia’s UN envoy: Middle East peace process hits deadlock due to its monopolization by US...

The settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has reached an impasse as it has been monopolized by the United States, Russia’s envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin has said.

The UN Security Council failed on Tuesday to vote in favor of a resolution on creating a Palestinian state and ending the Israeli occupation. The document did not receive the majority support and was vetoed by the US that criticized it as being untimely and unconstructive.

“We cannot share the objections of those who believe that the draft resolution undermined the prospects for the negotiation process,” Churkin said, adding that this year has witnessed how the process reached a deadlock as the Middle East Quartet, which brings together the US, UN, EU and Russia, was replaced by Washington's monopoly...............http://itar-tass.com/en/russia/770096
