French President to address nation after Paris shooting

French President Francois Hollande will address the nation later on Wednesday after shooting at a weekly in Paris killed at least 12 people, the President's office said.

Hollande will make a television appearance at 8 o'clock p.m. local time (19:00 GMT), the President's office added.

Two masked and heavily armed men stormed the offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, earlier in the day, killing at least 12 people, including two policemen.

While visiting the shooting scene, Hollande said the incident was "without doubt" a terrorist attack.

"It's a terrorist attack against an office that has been threatened several times, which is why it was protected," said Hollande.

"They will be hunted down as long as necessary for them to be brought to justice," the president stressed.

After the shooting, France has raised anti-terrorism alert in greater Paris area to the highest level.

All school trips in Paris have been cancelled and any activities outside school buildings are suspended until further notice.

An emergency government meeting is underway at Elysee.

In November 2011, the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo was attacked by a firebomb after the magazine put an image of the Prophet Mohammad on its cover.

In its last published cartoons, the weekly mocked Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State, which seized majot towns in Iraq and Syria.
