Lawmaker Says Syriza’s Potential Victory Disturbing Sign for EU. (New opportunities for developing Greece-Russia ties)

The victory of the Greek left-wing opposition party Syriza in parliamentary elections would become a "disturbing sign" for Europe, while it would open new opportunities for developing Greece-Russia ties, the deputy chief of an economic policy, innovation and entrepreneurship committee with Russia's State Duma told RIA Novosti on Sunday.

"The fact that Syriza is gaining so many votes is a very disturbing sign for the European Union, because it is telling of the crisis not only in Greece, but in Europe as well, the crisis of the whole political system of Europe. Syriza's victory will be a breakthrough and will destroy Europe's liberal consensus," Mikhail Emelyanov said.

He added that since there are other parties across Europe with similar ideology, it could be the beginning of Europe's "reformatting".
In terms of Greece's relations with Russia, Emelyanov said that Syriza's victory could open new ways for bilateral cooperation.

"I think that Syriza's victory … will bring about new opportunities for developing Russia-Greece relations," Emelyanov said.
According to the Sunday estimates from the Greek Interior Ministry, Syriza has received 36.5 percent of votes in the parliamentary elections in Greece, as a quarter of the votes have been counted.

Sunday snap parliamentary elections in Greece took place following the current parliament's dissolution over its failure to elect a new president after three attempts. Siryza has promised to revise Greece's austerity measures aimed at meeting the bailout conditions set by international creditors in exchange for multibillion loans issued over Greece's sovereign debt crisis.
