  1. Iraq's national museum reopens 12 years after looting...

Iraq's national museum has officially reopened after 12 years of painstaking efforts, during which close to a third of 15,000 pieces looted during the US-led invasion were recovered.

Haider al-Abadi, Iraq's prime minister, told Al Jazeera that Saturday's opening was important especially after the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group destroyed ancient statues in Mosul.

He pledged to protect the country's heritage.

On Thursday, ISIL fighters who have occupied Mosul since June last year released a video in which they smash ancient statues with sledgehammers in the city's museum.

Fighters are also seen using a jackhammer to deface a colossal 40-tonne Assyrian winged bull in an archaeological park in Mosul.

The destruction led to global outrage, calls for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council and fears over the fate of other major heritage sites in areas under ISIL control.

The Mosul destruction was the worst disaster to strike Iraq's treasures since the national museum in Baghdad was looted in the chaos that followed the US-led toppling of Saddam Hussein.

  2. Lebanese Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon said the "Phoenicians Road" tourism project adopted by the World Tourism Organization is "at the heart of Lebanon's heritage and history," according to the Daily Star paper on Saturday...

Pharaon made the remarks while launching with the World Tourism Organization (WTO) Secretary General Taleb Rifai the "Phoenicians Road" international tourism project, which highlights many touristic and cultural sites stretched in 18 countries in the Mediterranean Basin.

Pharaon said that this initiative comes "following a very difficult period the Lebanese tourism sector has witnessed with the drop of incoming tourists by 40 percent from 2011 till the end of 2013, due to the unstable security and political situation in Lebanon."

Rifai said that "7 percent of the world population travel yearly from one country to another and the international tourism sector proved to be a very strong industry despite all the challenges."

He stressed the importance of the "Phoenicians Road" for the 18 countries involved in it, adding that it is a peace initiative from Lebanon to the whole world despite the challenges it faces."

  3. Police in Germany heighten security citing possible Islamist threat...

Police in the north German city of Bremen warned of a heightened danger from Islamist militants and said they had increased their presence in the city centre and stepped up protection of the Jewish community.

They said in a statement they had searched an Islamic culture centre, detained several people for identity checks and arrested one person in connection with the measures. A spokesman for the police declined to give further details.

"Since yesterday evening the authorities in Bremen have indications, based on knowledge from the police, the domestic intelligence agency and a federal authority, of an increased threat from Islamist extremists," the police said.

Earlier this month a carnival parade in the northern German town of Braunschweig was cancelled at short notice due to a threat of an Islamist attack.

6. Ukraine's military said on Sunday a cease-fire had been fully observed in eastern separatist territories overnight, but warned that pro-Russian rebels were using the truce to regroup for new attacks on government positions, especially around the port of Mariupol...

A drop in violence and moves by both sides to withdraw heavy weapons from the front line had raised hopes a shaky two-week-old cease-fire could hold.

“In order to mislead OSCE representatives, the rebels are moving military equipment from the front line ... and bringing it back at night,” military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.

“There are signs the enemy is preparing for further offensives,” he said, naming as major targets government-held Mariupol, a strategic port city, and Artemivsk, north of the rebel stronghold of Donetsk..................http://www.voanews.com/content/ukraine-rebels-using-cease-fire-to-regroup/2663554.html

  7. Alexei Goncharenko, a member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada /parliament/, has been detained during a march of mourning in memory of Boris Nemtsov, who was shot dead in central Moscow overnight to Saturday, a police source said on Sunday...

The Moscow police department confirmed these reports, adding Goncharenko would be referred to Russia’s Investigations Committee.

In the meantime, the Antimaidan movement said in a statement that Goncharnko had taken part in the massacre of the movement’s activists in Odessa on May 2, 2014.

"There is no doubt he commended what was going on and instigated the massacre. He told about his involvement in the Odessa massacre in an interview with the Ukraina television channel," Antimaidan said in a statement posted on its website. The movement also referred to Goncharenko’s "photos on the backdrop of dead bodies" he had posted in social networks after the fire at Odessa’s House of Trade Unions. "When it became obvious that the Odessa massacre was condemned in Odessa and in the world, he removed these pictures and made a statement trying to whitewash himself," Antimaidan said.

"We demand this man be arrested… He must be arrested and brought to justice," the statement underscored.

The Antimaidan movement was set up in January 2015. Its goal, according to activists, is to prevent ‘colour revolutions’ in Russia.................http://tass.ru/en/russia/780310

  8. Italy right rallies against immigrants, Brussels ...

Thousands of supporters of Italy's anti-euro Northern League filled one of the biggest squares in Rome on Saturday, accusing the government of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi of selling the country out to faceless powers in Brussels.

Northern League leader Matteo Salvini, who called the rally, took aim at a series of targets, ranging from illegal immigrants and Romanian truck drivers to tax authorities, banks and big business.

"The problem isn't Renzi, Renzi is a pawn, Renzi is a dumb slave, at the disposal of some nameless person who wants to control all our lives from Brussels," he told the rally at the Piazza del Popolo, called just over two months ahead of regional elections in May.

Italy's center-right opposition has been in disarray for the past year, riven by faction-fighting and unable to mount a consistent challenge to Renzi, whose center-left Democratic Party holds a commanding lead in opinion polls.

However, 41 year-old Salvini has overseen a resurgence of his party since taking over as leader a little over a year ago, focusing on attacking immigration and the euro in a drive to broaden its appeal beyond its base in northern Italy.........Reuters.......http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/909621.shtml

According to the Finance Minister, Greece's new government enjoys strong public support in the country and needs just a little more time to implement necessary reforms aiming at resolution of the current debt crisis.

It is worth mentioning that previously the politician voiced his skepticism regarding the negotiations with the Greece's Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

  12. Ukrainian Volunteers Prepare to Defend Mariupol ...

Despite the ongoing ceasefire in Ukraine, soldiers in the city of Mariupol fear that pro-Russian separatists may be getting ready to attack. The separatists must take or encircle the city if they wish to gain land access to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia early last year. But Ukrainian forces, many of them volunteers, say they are determined to defend it.

On the hills overlooking the sea of Azov, soldiers of the Ukrainian army are digging in.

Was danach kommt, ist offen.

The United States will be ready to "protect" moderate Syrian rebels possibly with air power once they enter into combat, a top US official said March 2.

Retired US general John Allen, President Barack Obama's envoy to the international coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), insisted that once moderate Syrian rebels were vetted, trained and armed, they would not be abandoned on the battlefield.

"It is clearly part of our plan, that not only we will train them, and we will equip them with the latest weapons systems, but we will also protect them when the time comes," Allen said at an event organized by the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington.

Asked if the Syrian rebels would be asked to fight without air cover or a no-fly zone, Allen said "all of those things are under consideration."

"So it's important that you not believe that we would not support these fighters," he said.

He also said the coalition was "pleasantly surprised at the numbers" of Syrians ready to sign up for the fight against the ISIL group............http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/us-will-protect-syrian-rebels-when-time-comes-envoy-.aspx?pageID=238&nID=79105&NewsCatID=359

  27. Russia, Ukraine agree on gas delivery deal through to end of March...

Russia and Ukraine have agreed on a gas delivery deal through the end of March, despite the conflict over pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The agreement Monday ensures the two countries will fulfill a “winter package” of Russian natural gas for Ukraine, which runs out at the end of the month. Both sides had previously threatened to back out of the deal, which put in jeopardy gas supplies to the European Union.

European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, who chaired the talks, said the energy ministers of Russia and Ukraine also agreed to discuss a “summer package” of gas supplies later this month. He said he is “reassured that the supply of gas to the EU markets remains secure.”

The two sides agreed Monday that Ukraine would not have to pay for energy delivered to rebel-held areas – a major point of contention between the countries................http://sofiaglobe.com/2015/03/03/russia-ukraine-agree-on-gas-delivery-deal-through-march/

The leaders of the West African countries worst hit by Ebola called for more aid to eradiate the disease and rebuild their shattered economies at an international conference in Brussels Tuesday.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma and Alpha Conde of Guinea urged the world to help their recovery as the number of new cases slows.

More than 9,700 people have died of the disease since the west African epidemic emerged in southern Guinea in December 2013, with nearly 24,000 people infected, according to the World Health Organization.

"The impact of Ebola on our economies has been profound. 31.

  58. The military chief of Syria's al-Nusra Front militant group has been killed in an air strike, the group has said...

The jihadist group said on social media that three other leaders were killed along with Abu Homam al-Shami.

Syria's state-run news agency said the army had targeted Nusra leaders as they met in northern Idlib province, the Associated Press reported.

The Nusra Front is one of the most powerful groups fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

It was involved in a major attack on the Air Force Intelligence headquarters in the embattled city of Aleppo on Wednesday.

The group has long been considered an affiliate of al-Qaeda, although recent reports suggest it may be seeking to break those ties. The US lists it as a terrorist group and it is under UN Security Council sanctions..............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31757502

Malaysia Airlines, One Year Later: Similar Disappearance Could Happen Again ...

On March 8, 2014 a Malaysia Airlines flight took off from Kuala Lumpur enroute to Beijing. All transmission from the plane ended 40 minutes after take-off. The plane has not been found and is presumed to have crashed into the ocean. Exactly what happened and whether this type of incident could occur again remain unresolved issues.

“Good night -- Malaysian 370.” Those were the last words heard from a Malaysia Airlines plane before it vanished from radar. A year later, the plane and the 239 people on board have not been found.

U.S. commercial airline pilot Captain Ian Gebow said the traditional 30-minute to 60-minute communication between plane and ground needs to be constant when planes are over wide bodies of water when radar is sparse. "What we really need is real-time data tracking for when an act occurs," he said.

"We are creating a generation of pilots who are monitors, as opposed to professional aviators ... a generation of pilots who use automation as a crutch rather than an aide," said Gebow...............http://www.voanews.com/content/malaysia-airlines-one-year-later-similar-disappearance-could-happen-again/2671199.html

  71. Poland asks Russia’s to organize talks on possible food exports to Russia...

Following Greece’s lead, Poland has asked Russia’s veterinary and phytosanitary watchdog (Rosselkhoznadzor) to negotiate food exports to Russia, Rosselkhoznadzor’s chief Sergei Dankvert said on Friday.

"On the one hand, our Polish colleagues, along with the Lithuanians, used to say that they needed no bilateral agreements with Russia, but, on the other hand, they contacted us suggesting a working group on veterinary and phytosanitary control be held to spacify how to work in the bilateral regime," he told the Rossiya 24 television channel. Such talks are to be held in March 2015, he noted.

The Rosselkhoznadzor chief said that earlier in March his agency had received a letter from Greece asking to look at possible lifting of the Russian food imports ban. Greece’s ministry of agriculture, in his words, had asked Rosselkhoznadzor to commission Russian specialists to Greece to hold a seminar of safety requirements in respect of various types of food products. 88. Official: Kiev to agree with any outcome of Donbass elections held by Ukrainian laws...

The authorities in Kiev will accept any choice made by the people of Donbass, if the elections are held in compliance with Ukrainian legislation, Deputy Foreign Minister Vadim Pristaiko said on Sunday.

"First, ceasefire must be established and heavy weapons pulled back. Then we shall see how exactly elections can be held in compliance with Ukrainian legislation. The elections must be held in the same fashion as elsewhere in Ukraine. There are laws, there are monitors and there is the OSCE. We do not identify leaders in advance, but we would like to see the people make a free choice," Pristaiko said on Ukraine’s TV channel 112.

When asked if the authorities would agree with any choice the people of Donbass would make, Pristaiko said: "Yes, just as we proposed last year. We could have done that back last December."

Earlier, Pristaiko told the media Kiev was prepared to have a dialogue with officially elected Donbass leaders.
