Saudi Arabia accuses Sweden of 'flagrant interference' in affairs

Saudi Arabia accused Sweden's foreign minister on Wednesday of "flagrant interference" in its internal affairs after she criticised the country's human rights record, and confirmed that it is recalling its envoy in protest.

The move also comes a day after Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Loefven announced that Stockholm will not renew a 10-year-old military cooperation agreement with Riyadh, effectively ending defence ties due to mounting concerns over rights.

Margot Wallstroem's criticism was "harmful to the kingdom," the Saudi foreign ministry said, adding that it represented a "flagrant interference in internal affairs, which is not accepted in international conventions."

The ministry added that because Wallstroem's comments do not "go well with amicable relations between countries, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador from Sweden".

  2. Saudi Arabia has decided to return its envoy to Sweden, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said on Friday, in a move that will ease a diplomatic row over the Arab country's human rights record.

Saudi Arabia withdrew its envoy earlier this month over Swedish criticism of the monarchy's treatment of women and dissidents.
