Saudi warplanes bomb Houthi positions in Yemen

Warplanes of the Royal Saudi Air Force bombed the positions of Yemen’s Houthi militia, destroying an airbase in Sanaa and most of the militia’s air defenses, Al Arabiya News Channel reported early on Thursday, citing Saudi sources.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered the airstrikes on the Iran-backed Houthi militia on Thursday at 12 a.m. Riyadh time, the news channel reported, adding that the kingdom’s air force was “fully in control of Yemeni airspace.”

Shortly afterwards Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Washington Adel al-Jubeir announced that the kingdom had launched a military operation involving air strikes in Yemen against Houthi fighters who have tightened their grip on the southern city of Aden where the country's president had taken refuge.
Al-Jubeir told reporters that a 10-country coalition had joined in the military campaign in a bid "to protect and defend the legitimate government" of Yemen President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

"We will do whatever it takes in order to protect the legitimate government of Yemen from falling," Jubeir said...................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/03/26/GCC-states-to-repel-Houthi-aggression-in-Yemen-statement-.html

Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi ambassador to Washington, announced late Wednesday that his country and its Gulf allies have launched airstrikes on the Houthi rebels in Yemen to protect the legitimate government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

While American forces are not taking direct military action in Yemen in support of this effort, the U.S. is establishing a Joint Planning Cell with Saudi Arabia to coordinate U.S. military and intelligence support, Bernadette Meehan, a spokesperson with White House' s National Security Council said in a statement.

"The United States strongly condemns ongoing military actions taken by the Houthis against the elected government of Yemen," Meehan said, adding that Washington has been in close contact with Hadi and U.S. allies in the region...............http://www.china.org.cn/world/2015-03/26/content_35160780.htm

  2. President of Yemen flees by sea; Saudis begin airstrikes...

President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi fled Yemen by sea yesterday (March 25) as Shiite rebels and their allies moved on his last refuge in the south, captured its airport and put a bounty on his head, officials said. Hours later, Saudi Arabia announced it had begun airstrikes against the Houthi rebels.

The departure of the close US ally and the imminent fall of the southern port of Aden pushed Yemen further toward a violent collapse. It also threatened to turn the impoverished but strategic country into another proxy battle between the Middle East’s Sunni powers and Shiite-led Iran.

Saudi ambassador to the United States Adel al-Jubeir said his country had begun airstrikes against the rebels. He said his government had consulted closely with the US and other allies but that the US military was not involved in the operations.............http://www.todayonline.com/world/middle-east/president-yemen-flees-sea-saudis-begin-airstrikes
