The flight will take around five months, and the developers say the aim is to create awareness about replacing "old polluting technologies with clean and efficient technologies".
Solar Impulse founder André Borschberg was at the controls of the single-seater when it took off from the Al Bateen Executive Airport on Monday morning.
Borschberg and co-founder Bertrand Piccard will take turns to fly the plane around the world and switch seats during stopovers.
The plane is expected to reach its first destination - Muscat, Oman - after about 10 hours of flight.
Some legs of the trip, such as over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, will take five or six days.

ReplyDeleteΜια ιστορική αεροπορική πτήση ξεκίνησε από το διεθνές αεροδρόμιο του Αμπού Ντάμπι στα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα, από όπου το ηλιακό αεροσκάφος Solar Impulse-2 άρχισε την προσπάθεια του να κάνει το γύρο του κόσμου χωρίς να χρησιμοποιήσει καύσιμα.
Το ηλιακό μονοθέσιο αεροπλάνο με πιλότο τον Ελβετό Αντρέ Μπόρσχμπεργκ, απογειώθηκε στις 7:12 τοπική ώρα ( 5:12 ώρα Ελλάδας) από το αεροδρόμιο της πρωτεύουσας των Ηνωμένων Αραβικών Εμιράτων, για το πρώτο εγχείρημα να κάνει τον γύρο του κόσμου χωρίς ούτε μια σταγόνα καυσίμου. Στόχος η προώθηση των καθαρών πηγών ενέργειας.
Το ηλιακό αεροσκάφος με την απογείωσή του κατευθύνθηκε προς το Μουσκάτ, πρωτεύουσα του Ομάν, όπου αναμένεται να προσγειωθεί προς το τέλος της ημέρας. Επόμενος σταθμός θα είναι η Ινδία. Κατά τους επόμενους πέντε μήνες, θα περάσει από ήπειρο σε ήπειρο, διασχίζοντας τόσο τον Ειρηνικό όσο και τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό. Σε κάποια στάση της πολύμηνης διαδρομής τον πρώτο πιλότο Αντρέ Μπόρσχμπεργκ, θα διαδεχτεί ο επίσης Ελβετός πιλότος Μπέρτραντ Πικάρ.

El primer avión solar aterriza en Omán en el arranque de su vuelta al mundo ...
ReplyDeleteEl Solar Impulse 2, un avión suizo impulsado únicamente por energía solar, despegó este lunes de Abu Dabi (Emiratos Árabes Unidos) y aterrizó en Omán una hora más tarde de lo previsto, informa 'The Times of Omán'.
De la capital de Omán, Mascate, el avión se dirigirá a la India y después a otros lugares completando una vuelta al mundo por China, EE.UU. y Europa. El viaje tendrá una duración de unos cinco meses, en los que el avión cubrirá 35.000 de kilómetros.

Solar plane journey's first leg ends...
ReplyDeleteA record-breaking attempt to fly around the world in a solar-powered plane has completed its first leg.
The aircraft - called Solar Impulse-2 - took off from Abu Dhabi, heading east to Muscat in Oman.
With businessman and pilot Andre Borschbeg at the controls, the aircraft touched down in Oman at 16:14 GMT after a 12-hour flight.
Over the next five months, it will skip from continent to continent, crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

ReplyDeleteSolar Impulse 2 has been forced to delay its landmark crossing of the Pacific Ocean by making an unscheduled stop in the Japanese city of Nagoya on Monday due to bad weather on its planned route to Hawaii.
"Weather deteriorating over Pacific, decision taken for intermediate landing in Nagoya and wait for better conditions," Bertrand Piccard, the initiator of the mission, tweeted on Monday.
The Swiss-made solar-powered aircraft set off from Abu Dhabi in March on an unprecedented round-the-world journey it hopes to complete in five months.
It left the Chinese city of Nanjing early on May 31 en route to Hawaii -- the seventh and trickiest leg of its epic tour powered only by the sun.
The team behind Solar Impulse 2, which has more than 17,000 solar cells built into its wings, hopes to promote green energy with its circumnavigation attempt.
Ridiculed by the aviation industry when it was first unveiled, the venture has since been hailed around the world, including by UN chief Ban Ki-moon.
